The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gaines fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Johnson avoids it really well and circles away.
Johnson tries to counter by moving into the clinch but Gaines manages to circle out of the way.
Johnson scores with a shot to the body.

Johnson moves into the clinch.
Gaines stops a takedown attempt from Johnson.
Johnson tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
We're hearing some news coming in from back stage. It's official - Gaines has eaten all the pies!

Johnson breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Gaines is looking to clinch.
A head kick misses from Gaines .
Johnson half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range.
Gaines throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Johnson's waist but Johnson gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Gaines off to one side.
Gaines moves out of range of the body kick.
Johnson tries to clinch up against the ropes, rushing in to close the distance. Gaines manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.

Gaines darts in looking for a takedown but Johnson gets double underhooks and turns Gaines into the ropes.
Derrick Johnson has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Akilah Jah Gaines .
Johnson keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Johnson is looking to counter with head kicks.
Johnson thuds his right hand into Gaines 's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Gaines has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Johnson after a bit of a struggle.

Johnson is looking for a sweep. Gaines is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Johnson looking to hit a scissor sweep but Gaines is one step ahead there.
Gaines prevents Johnson from getting back to his feet.
Gaines loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Gaines fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Gaines shoots in for a takedown but Johnson shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.

Gaines rushes Johnson and pushes him back against the ropes in a clinch.
Johnson is pressed up against the ropes. Gaines has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Johnson down to the mat. Johnson avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.

Johnson tries to score a power double leg takedown but Gaines sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Johnson somewhat.
Gaines tries to close the distance and clinch up but Johnson swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Johnson is looking to counter with head kicks.

Gaines darts in and clinches Johnson up against the ropes.

Johnson is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Gaines pulls him back up using the underhooks.
Gaines jumps guard but Johnson stands there with Gaines around his waist. Gaines gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Gaines wants to break the clinch but can't.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
A short body shot lands from Gaines as the two fighters clinch.

Johnson breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Akilah Jah Gaines has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Derrick Johnson is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
