PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between DeMario Valdez (ranked 135 p4p, 17 weight class) and Steph Curry (ranked 1032 p4p, 128 weight class). Valdez comes to the cage accompanied by Era - Ameno. Curry is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Metallica - Enter Sandman. Buckle up people - heeeeeeeeeere we go!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the lightweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Steph Curry!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Curry on the wrong end of a vicious looking body shot.
Valdez throws out a loose jab but Curry uses good head movement to avoid it.
Curry gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Valdez counters with a nice uppercut.
Valdez rushes in with a sloppy looking punch
and Curry makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.
The fighters circling - Valdez throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Curry gets cracked there but stands up to it.
Curry scores with a straight right hand, right through his opponent's guard.
Curry tries to clinch
and Valdez connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Curry has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat.
Curry avoids the head kick by Valdez.
And Curry tries to counter it with a takedown but Valdez pushes his down on his head and steps out.
Curry fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Valdez avoids it really well and circles away.
Valdez avoids a lazy jab quite easily.

DeMario Valdez has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Steph Curry.

Curry closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Valdez to the mat! Valdez manages to get full guard.
Valdez pulls Curry in close to prevent any damage.
Curry stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Valdez swivels though and keeps the full guard.

If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.
Curry is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Curry is defended easily by Valdez.
Valdez swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Curry only half commits to the counter leg kick.

Curry dives in for a single leg takedown but Valdez sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Curry uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Valdez.
Valdez throws the left hand but Curry avoids the punch easily.
Valdez throws a body punch but Curry moves out of range.
Curry shoots in for a takedown but Valdez shows good takedown defense.
DeMario Valdez is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Valdez fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
We've been told by Valdez's head coaches at Crassus that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.

Curry takes the fight into the clinch.
Curry tries to score a body lock takedown but Valdez shows good agility there to stay on his feet.

Curry stalling in the clinch but Valdez improves position.

Valdez's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Curry drops his hands momentarily and Valdez takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head.

Curry darts in and clinches Valdez up against the cage.

Curry has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Valdez regains guard immediately.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Curry is stalling in the full guard.
Curry missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Curry trying to control the position from guard on top but Valdez is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Curry's corner is telling him to maintain position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Valdez cracks Curry with a right hand to the side of the head.
Curry darts in looking for a takedown but Valdez gets double underhooks and turns Curry into the cage.
Valdez fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Curry manages to avoid it.

Valdez gets caught napping as Curry dives in and scores a takedown. Valdez manages to retain guard.
Curry controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Curry pushes down on Valdez's leg and manages to get into half guard.
Valdez knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Curry on the ground.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Curry is looking to take a break and control but Valdez is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Curry trying to mount his opponent but Valdez defends it.

Curry seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

Valdez on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Valdez tries to get out of the position.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Curry trying to control the position from guard on top but Valdez is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Curry is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Valdez takes a thudding leg kick, right into the meat of the thigh.
Curry shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Valdez sprawls well. Valdez wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Curry gets slowly back to his feet.

Valdez slips in close and lands a nice hook before moving back out of range.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Valdez sends Curry crashing to the mat with a devastating uppercut! Valdez is motioning to the referee to let Curry up. He wants to try and finish this one on the feet!

Steph Curry seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Curry looks for a takedown but Valdez sprawls well.
Curry is still on wobbly legs! Can Valdez finish him?
Valdez lands an uppercut, right on the button! Curry tumbles backwards into the cage, staring vacantly into space! He's got no idea where he is, who he is or what day it is... Poor guy.
