Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Paul OConnell (ranked 801 p4p, 94 weight class) and Ryan Riggs (ranked 847 p4p, 104 weight class). Paul OConnell has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 26 - 17 - 1, fighting out of London, Paul OConnell!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 18 - 9 - 2, fighting out of St Petersburg, Ryan Riggs!
The judges for this bout are Jeff Smith, Micheangelo Fripello and Colin Fray.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Boom, another hit is landed. "You're gunna get knocked out" taunts Riggs, as that shot connected.

Riggs drives through with a takedown into OConnell's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Riggs postures up in OConnell's guard and throws a big left but OConnell blocks it.
OConnell avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
OConnell looking for a sweep. Not yet OConnell, not yet.
OConnell has control of Riggs's left arm, preventing Riggs from doing any damage.
Riggs trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Riggs must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Riggs wants to control from the top but OConnell keeps moving.
OConnell seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
Riggs throws an elbow that misses. OConnell uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Riggs's guard. Nice move by OConnell!

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
OConnell stopping the sweep attempt from Riggs.
OConnell wants to get up but he can't break Riggs's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

Riggs looking for submissions from the bottom but instead OConnell passes into side control.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Riggs tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but OConnell wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
OConnell will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.
Riggs manages to work his way to half guard, despite OConnell's best efforts.
Riggs gets back to full guard.
Riggs is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
OConnell passes Riggs's left leg - he's now in half guard.
Riggs makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Riggs.
OConnell looking to pass the guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Riggs is trying to keep OConnell in close.
OConnell stopping the sweep attempt from Riggs.

OConnell decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Riggs, up you get!
OConnell throws a jab when Riggs was well out of range.
Riggs takes an uppercut right on the jaw but it doesn't phase him.


It looks like Ryan Riggs has been cut.
Riggs swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
No luck for Riggs with that takedown attempt.
OConnell throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
Riggs swings away with a counter right hand but no contact made.
Riggs throws an uppercut from half a mile away. OConnell sees it coming and avoids it easily.
A big left from OConnell misses.

OConnell manages to wriggle out and sneak his way back up to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched up against the cage.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Riggs tries to throw a body punch but OConnell avoids it by throwing Riggs back against the cage.
OConnell lands with a left to the head.
OConnell digs a right hand into Riggs's ribs. Those have got to be taking their toll on Riggs's gas tank.
A short right hand to the side of the head by Riggs.
OConnell has a couple of punches blocked by Riggs.
OConnell prevents a takedown attempt there.

Riggs breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
OConnell throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
Good standup being displayed there by OConnell as he connects with a hook.
Riggs takes a jab on the nose there. A little bit of blood seems to be coming out. Hopefully that won't affect his breathing.
OConnell misses with a hook
and Riggs cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.

OConnell feints and then winds up with a huge right hand that connects perfectly and sends Riggs sprawling to the canvas! Riggs rolls over backwards and springs off the cage and manages to regain his footing - how acrobatic! Oh, he's still wobbly - can OConnell finish him?!


Riggs is rocked!


That has opened up Ryan Riggs's cut even more.
Paul OConnell seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
OConnell fires a straight punch through the middle that cracks Riggs square on the jaw! Damn, Riggs is out cold on his feet and topples face first to the canvas! Wow, I haven't seen a knockout that brutal in a long time!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:54 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Paul OConnell!
After winning the bout, Paul OConnell thanked all his fans and promised he'd do even better in his next fight. The crowd seemed to love his humility.
