PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Gilbert Spears (ranked 5134 p4p, 0 weight class) and Roy Nielsen (ranked 5141 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Gilbert Spears!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Roy Nielsen!
The judges for this bout are John Kavanagh, Columbo Gatti and John Roberts.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Nielsen thumps Spears with a low kick.

Nielsen drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.

Spears has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Nielsen can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Spears looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Spears is on top in guard.

Spears wants to get up but he can't break Nielsen's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Nielsen tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Spears would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Spears is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

Spears gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.

The fight moves into the clinch position.

Spears has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Nielsen uses from the top position.
Spears will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Spears has his feet on Nielsen's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Nice work.

Nielsen closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Spears's guard.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Spears tries to hold on but Nielsen postures up.
Spears is wriggling around trying to escape.

Nielsen is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Spears has managed to escape the submission attempt.
Spears tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Spears sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though.
Nielsen trying to control the action but Spears is working from the bottom.
Spears wants to get back to full guard but Nielsen has passed into side control.

Spears is not content to let Nielsen control the position.

Nielsen decides to stand back up.
Spears tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Nielsen was well out of range. Poor timing from Spears.

Nielsen closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.

Nielsen gets control of Spears's arms and successfully pulls guard. Nielsen will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.

Spears got a little sloppy there for a moment and Nielsen has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Spears has managed to get both his arms back between Nielsen's legs - danger averted.

Spears stands up and waves to Nielsen to follow him.

Nielsen bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Roy Nielsen dominated that round.

Spears tries to sprawl but Nielsen drives through with a takedown into half guard.
Spears misses with some strikes from the bottom.
Spears flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.
Spears is refusing to be controlled, as Nielsen sits in half guard.
Spears landing small, sideways elbows.

Nielsen is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Spears is just riding it out for now. Nielsen eventually gives up the hold.
Spears tries to get to full guard but Nielsen has control of the leg.

Spears is not content to let Nielsen control the position.

Spears is looking to escape.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Spears throws a strike from the bottom that misses.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

Nielsen shoots in and gets a takedown into Spears's guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Nielsen is breathing heavily.
Spears keeping moving, preventing Nielsen from controlling successfully.
Nielsen has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Spears manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Nielsen manages to get himself to full guard.


Spears stands up from Nielsen's guard - Spears perhaps looking for a knockout.

Nielsen tries to sprawl but Spears drives through with a takedown into half guard.

Spears is working for a kimura but Nielsen is defending it quite comfortably.
Spears wants to stand up but Nielsen is controlling the position.
Spears content to control rather than advance.

Spears decides he's had enough of the ground and stands up.
Spears showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Nielsen.

Spears misses with a few strikes there.
Spears ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Nielsen moves away.
Nielsen lets it all go there with a big combo counter but none of the punches connected.
Nielsen throws a head kick but Spears moves out of range.

Spears pushes Nielsen up against the cage in a clinch.

Nielsen has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Spears regains guard immediately.
Spears wants to get back to his feet but he's too absorbed in his own little project and Nielsen manages to pass to side control.

Well, if Nielsen is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

Spears throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Nielsen escapes and throws Spears's legs to the side, diving into side control!
Spears throws a few strikes from the bottom but Nielsen takes advantage and mounts!

Nielsen is trying to control the action in half guard but Spears is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

Spears is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Spears throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Nielsen escapes and throws Spears's legs to the side, diving into side control!

Nielsen tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Spears throws a couple of punches but he's in a bad position and they don't land.

Nielsen has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.

Nielsen shoots in and gets a takedown into Spears's guard.

Spears working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Nielsen doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Nielsen manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Nielsen drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Nielsen jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Nielsen closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Spears to the mat! Spears manages to get full guard.

Nielsen wants to stand but Spears has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Nielsen pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Spears is keeping the position for now.
Nielsen must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Spears controls Nielsen momentarily but Nielsen frees himself.

Spears is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.

Nielsen is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Spears will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Roy Nielsen seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Spears bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.

Spears stands up and beckons Nielsen to his feet.
Nielsen swings wildly with a hook that is half blocked by Spears.
The step up in weight doesn't seem to be a problem for Nielsen. He's performing admirably here against the bigger man.
Horrible takedown attempt by Spears or perhaps it was just good defense by Nielsen, which made it look bad.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Roy Nielsen comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Nielsen has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
