PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Mike McKinley (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Omeryc Maia (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). McKinley's ring entrance music is that housewives' favourite, Swing That Tambourine. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Mike McKinley!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Omeryc Maia!
The judges for this bout are Leandro Rodrigues, Thiago Cunha and Seu Braga.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

McKinley shoots in for a takedown and gets it.

McKinley seems to be working for a kimura but Maia defends the submission attempt.
McKinley is taking a breather. Maia says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Maia trying to control but McKinley postures up.
Maia wants to get back to his feet.
McKinley throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.

McKinley stands up from half guard.
McKinley fails to land the takedown.
Maia throws a body kick but he was well out of range there.

McKinley throws a body kick but he wasn't in range.
Maia shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with McKinley but McKinley pushes him off and we're back to square one.
McKinley tries to close the distance and clinch but Maia swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

and Maia makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.

McKinley moves into range and clinches up with Maia.
McKinley tries to pull guard but Maia holds him up against the cage and eventually McKinley drops back down to his feet.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Mike McKinley. That's going to take a lot out of him.
McKinley can't get the takedown.
McKinley is pressed up against the cage. Maia has hold of a leg and is looking to drag McKinley down to the mat. McKinley avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Maia tries to clinch there but McKinley circles away.

and Maia counters with a nice double leg into guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
McKinley is breathing heavily.
Maia is looking to stand up but McKinley won't let him.

McKinley had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Maia is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. McKinley Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Maia's back instead.
Maia rolls and manages to get back to half guard. Nicely done.

McKinley wants to pass to mount but Maia is defending the position.
Maia controlling the position for now.
McKinley controlling the action here.
McKinley prevents Maia from improving his position.
Maia trying to control but McKinley postures up.
Maia throws a strike from the bottom that misses.

Maia wants to control but McKinley is keeping busy.
McKinley will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Maia is trying to avoid being dragged into an even worse position than he's already in but McKinley is staying active.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Maia will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Maia fails with a takedown attempt.

McKinley shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away.

McKinley moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, Maia has worked his arm free - good work by Maia!

McKinley goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Maia rolls with the submission and now he's on top in McKinley's guard! Nice work there by Maia!

Maia stands up from guard. Let's bang!

That's four minutes gone in the round.
McKinley checks a low kick from Maia.

McKinley pushes Maia up against the cage in a clinch.
Maia drops down looking for an ankle pick but McKinley pulls his leg out and moves away.

and Maia counters with a nice double leg into side control. McKinley won't be happy with that.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Maia is trying to get an arm triangle but McKinley is defending well.
McKinley is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Maia off and has taken his back!
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

McKinley is remaining active here, looking for the choke. The more discerning members of the crowd will appreciate his efforts.

Maia is displaying good submission defense - not really looking in danger of submitting to the rear naked choke at the moment. That could change in an instant of course if McKinley gets his way!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Omeryc Maia will probably get the nod.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!

McKinley closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Maia to the mat! Maia manages to get full guard.

McKinley stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Maia swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Maia isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. McKinley stacks Maia on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by McKinley!
You can see the frustration on Maia's face as McKinley controls the position.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Maia feints and as McKinley raises his hands in defense, Maia changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
McKinley wants to control from the top but Maia keeps moving.

Maia is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Maia controls McKinley momentarily but McKinley frees himself.
McKinley trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Maia wants to stand and escape but McKinley is having none of it.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
McKinley closes the distance looking to clinch
and Maia counters with a left and a right that stings McKinley.

McKinley closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Mike McKinley dominated that second round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!


McKinley tries to close the distance and clinch up but Maia swats him away and circles back towards the center.
McKinley shoots in but Maia avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Maia shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts McKinley as he jumps to the side.
Maia bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
Mike McKinley seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

McKinley clinches up with Maia and pushes him back against the cage.
Maia fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Knees to the body from McKinley.

McKinley pulls guard effortlessly.

Maia avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Maia trying to control the position from guard on top but McKinley is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Omeryc Maia has got the better of the ground game so far.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

McKinley pushes Maia off and scrambles back to his feet.

Maia will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Mike McKinley has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Omeryc Maia.

McKinley shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Maia's guard.
McKinley controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

Maia drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Maia jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Maia postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

McKinley escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Maia gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Maia drops back looking for a leg! McKinley is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and McKinley manages to kick Maia off! Maia jumps back into McKinley's guard.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as McKinley holds on and takes a little breather.

And that's the end of the fight!
Mike McKinley showed his dominance in that final round.
I think McKinley has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
