PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Olli Kuhta (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Veijo Meri (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Kuhta comes to the cage accompanied by Break Out. Meri has chosen hold me, thrill me, kiss me, kill me as his entrance music. Veijo Meri will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Olli Kuhta!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Veijo Meri!
The judges for this bout are Roosa Järviläinen, Johanna Lukiainen and Anni Minnemäki.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Meri moves out of range of the body kick from Kuhta.
Meri tries to clinch up but Kuhta circles away and keeps his distance.

Kuhta fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Meri, pushing him back against the cage.
Meri is trying to break free.

Meri breaks from the clinch.

Kuhta clinches up against the cage.
Kuhta has Meri pressed against the cage.
Kuhta can't find room to land a body shot as Meri controls the action.
Some stalling of biblical proportions here from Kuhta.
Meri can't get the takedown.
Meri goes for a takedown attempt but Kuhta pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
Olli Kuhta seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Meri tries to close the distance and clinch up but Kuhta swats him away and circles back towards the center.
A slapping leg kick lands for Meri.
Meri fails in his attempt to clinch.
Kuhta cracks Meri with a good jab.

Meri shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Kuhta as he avoids it easily.

Kuhta doesn't manage to clinch there - Meri circles away.

A real battle for position is taking place between these two warriors.

The is referee keeping an eye on Kuhta - much more stalling and he will separate the fighters.

Kuhta's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Meri has his takedown stuffed
and Kuhta counters with a right hand to the body.

Meri shoots in looking for a takedown. Kuhta tries to sprawl out of it but Meri keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Kuhta manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Kuhta wants to clinch up but Meri keeps it at a distance.
Kuhta throws a looping overhand right but Meri ducks down to avoid it.
Meri tries to clinch up but Kuhta circles away and keeps his distance.
Kuhta throws a head kick but Meri moves out of range.
Kuhta takes a head kick and shrugs it off.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

and Meri counters with a good, hard body kick but Kuhta shrugs it off.
Meri tries to grapple but his opponent circles

and Kuhta counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Meri manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Meri throwing strikes here but Kuhta is writhing around nicely and avoiding any serious damage.
Meri has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Meri can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Kuhta is looking to escape.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Olli Kuhta will probably get the nod.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!


A left and a right from Meri both land. Nice combination.

Meri throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Kuhta.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Kuhta drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.

Kuhta slips a nice elbow through Meri's hands, connecting with Meri's forehead.
Meri moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Meri is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Kuhta controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Kuhta looking to sit in guard and control but Meri gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Kuhta escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Meri gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Meri wants to get up but he can't break Kuhta's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Kuhta is trying to control the position from the bottom.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Meri tries to clinch up.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Olli Kuhta dominated that second round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!

Meri has had enough of the clinch but Kuhta keeps him there for the moment.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Meri wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Kuhta has him pressed against the cage.

The pace really dropping off here, momentarily.

Olli Kuhta is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Olli Kuhta.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Kuhta, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
