PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Ralf Townsend (ranked 5390 p4p, 0 weight class) and Henning Berg (ranked 5288 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Ralf Townsend!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Henning Berg!
The judges for this bout are Andrew Berry, Daniel Bishop and James Glass.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Berg rushes Townsend and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Berg tries to break the clinch but Townsend is controlling the position.
Townsend jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Berg walks away with a smile on his face. Townsend gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Berg fakes with the hands and throws a leg kick but Townsend is out of range.

Berg closes the distance and clinches.
Townsend has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Berg is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.

Berg pulls guard.
Berg is controlling Townsend's posture.

Berg has his foot on Townsend's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Townsend works his way back into a safe position though.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Berg seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
Townsend has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Berg is continuing to stall.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Berg is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.


Berg wants to work for an arm triangle but Townsend is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Berg not doing much here.
Townsend is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Berg controlling the pace.
It looks like Berg might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.
Townsend knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Berg on the ground.
Berg's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
Berg throwing shots but Townsend is blocking nicely.

Berg is nestled in close to Townsend, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
Berg looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.

Berg is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Townsend doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Berg.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Berg is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.

Berg is trying to work for a kimura but Townsend is defending well.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Townsend is defending against the submission attempts here by Berg.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Henning Berg dominated that round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Townsend shoots in for a double leg but Berg sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Berg tries a quick counter leg kick but Townsend is wise to it.
Berg has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Berg gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.
Townsend wants to break free but Berg has control.
Townsend wants a takedown but no success here.
Berg throws a vicious knee straight up the middle but Townsend blocks it with crossed arms.
Berg is looking to take this one to the mat.
Townsend jumps guard but Berg turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Ralf Townsend. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Townsend tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Berg smiles and moves away.

Townsend wants to break the clinch but can't.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Berg is trying to push Townsend away but Townsend has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.
Berg blocks a body shot from Townsend.
Townsend looking to throw knees to the head but Berg is blocking nicely.
Berg slowing the pace effectively.

Berg has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Townsend uses from the top position.

Berg is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched.

Berg lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Berg passes easily into side control. Nice work.
Henning Berg has got the better of the ground game so far.

Berg tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Berg has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Townsend tries to control the position but he's not in luck - Berg easily slips into full mount!
Berg tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.

Berg looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Townsend in a bad spot here, taking shots to the head.
Berg has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Townsend's face.

Townsend working to try and regain half guard.

Berg working for a guillotine from mount but Townsend is in no mood to give up.
Berg raining down hammerfists from mount.
Townsend can't escape the position.
Berg lands a couple of good shots and Townsend has given up his back, trying to escape the position!


It looks like Ralf Townsend has been cut.
Berg has the hooks in. Townsend is trying to push off one leg but he has to do so cautiously to avoid being submitted.

Berg working for the rear naked choke here. He's got one arm under but Townsend is defending well. A couple of punches soften him up though and Berg has tightened the hold! This one could be all over! It is! Townsend taps out!
