PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Maximo Ruiz (ranked 25100 p4p, 0 weight class) and Kostas Pappas (ranked 6920 p4p, 535 weight class). Pappas has chosen Trapt - Headstrong as his entrance music. Kostas Pappas will no doubt be looking to use his reach advantage to good effect.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 5 - 1, fighting out of Sydney, Maximo Ruiz!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Kostas Pappas!
The judges for this bout are Winston Howard, Bruno Hogan and Ben Hemmingworth.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Pappas throws a head kick that Ruiz semi-blocks.


It looks like Maximo Ruiz has been cut.
Pappas fails with the takedown
and Ruiz counters with a left to the body.
Pappas tries to bum rush Ruiz with a series of wild strikes but Ruiz uses good footwork to avoid the assault.

Pappas closes the distance and pushes Ruiz back into the cage.

Ruiz is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Ruiz fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Pappas avoids it really well and circles away.

Pappas closes the distance and pushes Ruiz back into the cage.
Pappas is trying to drag Ruiz to the mat but Ruiz just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.

Pappas manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Ruiz is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Pappas wants to stand and escape but Ruiz is having none of it.

Pappas is working an open guard so Ruiz takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.

Pappas drives through with a takedown into Ruiz's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.

Pappas drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Ruiz dives on top into guard.

Ruiz could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

Pappas throws a body kick that misses.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Pappas closes the distance and clinches.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Ruiz wants the takedown. Pappas is fighting it off but Ruiz persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Pappas's guard against the cage.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


An inside leg kick lands from Pappas.
Pappas throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Ruiz.
Ruiz throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Pappas enables Ruiz to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Pappas manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

Pappas connects with a good right hand that stumbles Ruiz. Ruiz circles away out of range and recomposes himself.

We've been informed that Pappas has been working hard on his conditioning in the buildup to the fight.

Ruiz shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Ruiz showed some decent athleticism there.

Ruiz wants to take a breather but Pappas is having none of it.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Ruiz looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Pappas with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.

Pappas shoots in for a takedown but Ruiz shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.

Pappas postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Ruiz is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Pappas, into his guard.

Ruiz drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Ruiz jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Ruiz decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
Ruiz dives in and grabs Pappas's left leg, looking for a takedown. Pappas pushes down on Ruiz's head and hops out.
Pappas shoots in for a takedown but Ruiz shows good takedown defense.
Maximo Ruiz has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Kostas Pappas.
Pappas shoots for a takedown but Ruiz saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

Ruiz is trying to pull guard but Pappas has him pressed against the cage.

Ruiz tightens his grip and picks Pappas up, before dumping him to the ground. Pappas manages to land in guard.
Ruiz is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

Ruiz decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
Kostas Pappas seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Ruiz darts in looking for a takedown but Pappas gets double underhooks and turns Ruiz into the cage.
Pappas swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Pappas shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Ruiz pinned against the cage. Ruiz gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

Ruiz lands a jab-cross combination.

Pappas moves into range and clinches up with Ruiz.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Ruiz is trying to control the position from the bottom.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Pappas throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Ruiz works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

And that's the end of the fight!
Maximo Ruiz showed his dominance in that final round.
