PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between John Brophy (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rashad Michaels (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Michaels has chosen Forever as his entrance music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, John Brophy!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Rashad Michaels!
The judges for this bout are William Peck, Steve Smith and Dillan Fox.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Michaels looks to score with a jab to the body but Brophy is just out of range.
Michaels misses with a head kick.

Michaels drives through with a takedown into guard.
Brophy looking for a sweep. Not yet Brophy, not yet.

Brophy throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.

Brophy looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Michaels landing with the ground and pound.

Brophy working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Michaels doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Michaels manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Michaels decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.

Brophy darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.

Brophy is looking for a kimura but Michaels is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Brophy to get the leverage.
Brophy stalling away here and it's allowed Michaels to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard.
Michaels really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Brophy. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Brophy wanted to stand there but Michaels had control of the position.
Brophy is breathing heavily.
Michaels has his hands on Brophy's head, controlling the position.
Michaels looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Michaels is trying to control the position from the bottom.

Michaels wants to get back to his feet but Brophy is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Brophy throws a big right hand that misses.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Michaels wants to slow Brophy down by chopping away at his legs.

and Brophy counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Michaels's guard now.
Michaels controls Brophy momentarily but Brophy frees himself.

Brophy drops back looking for a leg! Michaels is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Michaels manages to kick Brophy off! Brophy jumps back into Michaels's guard.

Michaels escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Brophy gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Brophy drops back looking for a leg! Michaels is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Michaels manages to kick Brophy off! Brophy jumps back into Michaels's guard.
Brophy trying to control the position from guard on top but Michaels is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Brophy drops back, looking for a kneebar! Michaels looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Michaels looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Michaels!

Michaels stands up and we're back to a striking position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Michaels shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Brophy counters with a single leg into guard. Michaels didn't expect that.
Michaels lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Brophy!

Michaels is going olschool here, as he tries to force Brophy to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Brophy shrugs it off.
Brophy squirming around on the bottom, looking to escape.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Brophy is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Michaels looking to control but Brophy is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.

Michaels is standing up out of mount! Strange tactic there - he must really want this one on the feet!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

John Brophy dominated that round.
That's time! Brophy's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Brophy feints and then cracks Michaels's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Michaels down.

and Brophy counters with a single leg into guard. Michaels didn't expect that.

Brophy drops back looking for a leg! Michaels is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Michaels manages to kick Brophy off! Brophy jumps back into Michaels's guard.

Brophy thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Michaels is trying to keep Brophy in close.

Brophy has hold of Michaels's arm here. He's working for an Americana. It looks like he might have it! Michaels tries to escape but he's just digging himself in deeper - Brophy cranks the arm and Michaels screams in pain! The ref makes a decision and ends the fight before the tap - no complains from Michaels, who is just happy to have his arm attached to his body.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:55 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Americana). John Brophy!
