The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Charles closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Philips tries to bench press Charles off him but Charles keeps the position.
Charles just content to control the position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Charles tries to move to mount but Philips blocks the move with his legs.
Philips tries to improve position but can't.
Philips really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Charles. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Philips tries to control but end up mounted... ooooh, that's bad.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Philips tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Charles controlling the pace for now.
Charles avoids the attempt from Philips to control.
Philips can't escape the position.
Charles controlling his opponent.

Philips tries to hold on but Charles pushes him away.
Philips wants to improve position but instead he's given up his back.
Philips is really stuck here.
Philips just trying to survive but Charles is wriggling into a better position, looking to finish.
Philips tries to escape the position - he's now mounted. Is that better or worse? Hard to tell!
Charles sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment.
Charles has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Charles wants to take Philips's back but he can't do it this time.

Philips tries to lock up and control but Charles gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Philips is desperately trying to improve his position but Charles has a good base and remains in mount.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Charles fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Philips avoids it really well and circles away.
Philips shoots for a double leg takedown but Charles sprawls well. He's pushed Philips's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Charles shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Charles was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
You can see the frustration on Philips's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Philips tries to improve position but can't.
Charles is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Philips can do to turn this around?

Philips is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Rubens Charles overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Charles tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.

Philips wants to improve position but instead he's given up his back.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Philips is trying to stand back up.

Charles is persistently looking for the submission but Philips is defending it well.
Philips trying to control the position but Charles manages to sink in the hooks.

Charles has the hooks in. Philips is trying to push off one leg but he has to do so cautiously to avoid being submitted.
Philips looks to control his opponent's hands but he's not mananging it at the moment.

Charles is working for the choke. I would put my money on him to finish from this position. He's rolled onto his back and has dragged Philips with him. Philips is trying to defend but Charles has an arm under the chin now! Philips grimaces and is forced to tap out!
