PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Cornell Gibbs (ranked 5420 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rick Ross (ranked 5437 p4p, 0 weight class). Ross is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: jellyfish jam. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Cornell Gibbs!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Rick Ross!
The judges for this bout are Johanna Lukiainen, Ben Zyskovitsi and Matti Vanhoillinen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Decent striking displayed by Ross there.


It looks like Cornell Gibbs has been cut.
Gibbs displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Ross.
It looked like Gibbs was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit.

Ross shoots in and gets a takedown into Gibbs's guard.
Gibbs wants to sweep but no luck.
Ross must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Ross is fighting to break Gibbs's control of his arms but Gibbs is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Ross trying to control the position from guard on top but Gibbs is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
Gibbs is pulling down on Ross's head. It's preventing any offense from Ross, at least for the moment.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Gibbs clinches up with Ross and pushes him back against the cage.
Ross is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Gibbs gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.

Ross tries to pull guard but Gibbs forces him back to his feet, against the cage.

The fighters are pressed against the cage, as the pace of the fight slows.
Ross can't find room to land a body shot as Gibbs controls the action.
Gibbs just leaning against Ross, taking a breather.
Gibbs tries to circle away but Ross has him pinned against the cage.
Ross tries to score a body lock takedown but Gibbs shows good agility there to stay on his feet.

Gibbs manages to wriggle out and sneak his way back up to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched up against the cage.

Gibbs breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Ross darts in looking for a takedown but Gibbs gets double underhooks and turns Ross into the cage.

Ross drives through and clinches with Gibbs against the cage.
Ross tries for a takedown. No joy.
Some stalling of biblical proportions here from Gibbs.
Gibbs is trying to push Ross away but Ross has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.
Gibbs wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Ross has him pressed against the cage.
Gibbs stalling here - the referee won't stand for too much of that.
Gibbs fails to pull the fight into his guard.

Gibbs breaks the clinch.
A head kick misses from Ross.

Ross moves into the clinch.
Gibbs wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Ross has him pressed against the cage.
Ross jumps guard but Gibbs stands there with Ross around his waist. Ross gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Gibbs can't break the clinch.

Gibbs breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Ross moves into range and clinches up with Gibbs.
Ross has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Gibbs avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Gibbs wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.
Gibbs is trying to break the clinch but Ross has him pressed against the cage.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Gibbs tries to circle away but Ross has him pinned against the cage.

A real battle for position is taking place between these two warriors.

Gibbs bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.

Ross tries to wriggle free to get back to his feet but he's given up his back! Oops.

Ross is being controlled on the ground here - he must escape this position otherwise surely the end is near.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
You can see the frustration on Ross's face… He knows he is in trouble unless he improves his position sooner rather than later.
Gibbs is working the ground and pound here and the referee is taking a close look at Ross. He must escape soon or this one will be stopped.
Ross tries to roll but Gibbs sticks to his back.
Gibbs just keeping the dominant position. He can't wait too long though, otherwise the referee will stand them back up.

Good control from Gibbs.
Ross tries to escape the position.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Can Ross hold on?! Gibbs is landing more strikes to his hapless foe.

Gibbs is hanging on to Ross's back as he tries to escape.
Ross is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
Ross is breathing heavily.

Ross is very frustrated here, being controlled quite effectively by Gibbs.

Ross shoots for a double leg takedown but Gibbs sprawls well. He's pushed Ross's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Cornell Gibbs overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Ross dives in for a single leg takedown but Gibbs sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Gibbs is looking to counter with a shot to the body.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Ross throws a right and a left that both miss.
