PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Frankie Ross (ranked 23864 p4p, 0 weight class) and Shehbaz Sandhu (ranked 5876 p4p, 0 weight class). Shehbaz Sandhu told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Frankie Ross!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Shehbaz Sandhu!
The judges for this bout are Yves DeLean, William Peck and Steve Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sandhu shoots in looking for a takedown. Ross tries to sprawl out of it but Sandhu keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Ross manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Sandhu throws a body kick, spinning off balance

and Ross counters by clinching up.
Sandhu wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Ross has him pressed against the cage.
Sandhu wants to get back to striking at distance but Ross won't allow it.
Sandhu managing to block the knees to the body from Ross.
The pace slowing considerably in the clinch, as Sandhu takes a break from that fighting nonsense to think about the finer things in life.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Sandhu is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Ross gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.
Sandhu is looking to break free of the clinch but Ross has double underhooks.

Ross breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Sandhu shoots in for a takedown but Ross shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
As Sandhu tries to get set, Ross tries to push him back and clinch up but Sandhu manages to avoid the attempt.

Ross is trying to pull guard but Sandhu turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.
Ross swings wildly with an uppercut but Sandhu uses good head movement to avoid it.
Sandhu tries to circle away but Ross has him pinned against the cage.
Sandhu has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Ross avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.

Sandhu tries to land knees in the clinch but Ross avoids the damage to the body.
Ross tries to pull guard but Sandhu forces him back to his feet, against the cage.

Ross breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Sandhu shoots in but Ross avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Ross throws the left hand but Sandhu avoids the punch easily.
Sandhu tries to score a power double leg takedown but Ross sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Sandhu somewhat.
Sandhu dives in and grabs Ross's left leg, looking for a takedown. Ross pushes down on Sandhu's head and hops out.
Ross seemed to be looking to counter by closing the distance.

Sandhu fails with a takedown attempt.
Ross appears to be looking for a counter takedown.
Ross misses with a series of wild punches.
A countering left hand to the body from Sandhu misses.
Sandhu shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Ross defends it nicely.
Ross drops down looking for a counter takedown but Sandhu sprawls and moves away.
Ross doesn't manage to clinch there - Sandhu circles away.

Ross throws a big elbow that misses.
Ross working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.

Ross has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Ross makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.

Ross gets to his feet. Sandhu looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!

Sandhu throws a sloppy head kick and Ross moves out of range easily.
Ross tries to counter with a takedown but Sandhu is quick to defend against it.
Shehbaz Sandhu seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Sandhu misses with a takedown attempt - Ross sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Ross really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Sandhu throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Ross's waist but Ross gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Sandhu off to one side.

Ross shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Sandhu's guard.

It looked like Ross was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit.

Sandhu is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Ross's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Ross's back!

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!



Sandhu has closed the distance and engaged Ross in a clinch.
A bit of stalling here from Ross.

Sandhu manages to pull guard.
Sandhu controls Ross momentarily but Ross frees himself.
Ross throws an elbow that misses. Sandhu uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Ross's guard. Nice move by Sandhu!

Ross pulls Sandhu in close to his closed guard and prevents Sandhu from doing any damage or advancing position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Ross bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Sandhu's guard.

Sandhu must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Sandhu might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Ross haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.

Ross manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Sandhu manages to get himself to full guard.

Sandhu is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Ross stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Ross wants it to stay on the feet.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Ross is looking to take this fight into the clinch.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Shehbaz Sandhu.
Well Ross has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
