PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Veikko Pilvi (ranked 2790 p4p, 310 weight class) and Denver Washington (ranked 5204 p4p, 463 weight class). Pilvi comes to the cage accompanied by Faded. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 24 - 14 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Veikko Pilvi!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 25 - 18 - 1, fighting out of Los Angeles, Denver Washington!
The judges for this bout are Robert Twigg, George Francis and Alan Glass.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Pilvi misses with a body kick.

Pilvi has managed to clinch.
Washington tries for a takedown. No joy.
Washington is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Pilvi pulls him back up using the underhooks.
Washington throws a punch but it's blocked by Pilvi.

Washington's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Washington rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Pilvi moves out of range and avoids them all easily.

Washington changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Pilvi looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Pilvi tries to buck Washington off but Washington is having none of it.
Washington throws a strike aimed at the side of Pilvi's head but Pilvi avoids it well.
Pilvi tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Pilvi gets back to half guard.

Pilvi is not content to let Washington control the position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Washington stands up out of the half guard.

Pilvi scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.

Washington has managed to escape just enough to sneak back to his feet but Pilvi is on him like a limpet, forcing Washington back against the cage.
Washington throws an elbow but it's blocked.
Washington jumps guard but Pilvi stands there with Washington around his waist. Washington gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Veikko Pilvi has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Denver Washington.
Washington has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Pilvi avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
An uppercut to the body lands inside from Pilvi.
Washington is working on a leg, looking for a takedown but Pilvi is defending well.
Washington jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Pilvi walks away with a smile on his face. Washington gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Washington shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Pilvi napping and manages to drive through into side control!

Washington lands a few punches from side control.
Washington working away.
Pilvi is looking to regain half guard here but Washington keeps moving and retains side control.

Washington decides to stand back up. Washington steps back and let's Pilvi get back to his feet.
Sloppy strikes from Pilvi. Those never looked like landing.
Pilvi leaves Washington with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Washington tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Pilvi swivels and escapes.

Washington is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.
Washington misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Pilvi.

Washington ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Washington no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
Pilvi wants to control from the top but Washington keeps moving.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Denver Washington will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


No luck for Pilvi with that takedown attempt.
Washington dives in for a single leg takedown but Pilvi sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.

Pilvi is pressed up against the cage. Washington has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Pilvi down to the mat. Pilvi avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Washington tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Pilvi defends well and Washington ends up having to push Pilvi into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
Veikko Pilvi has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Denver Washington.
A slapping body kick lands there for Pilvi.

and Pilvi counters with a one-two to the body.
Washington on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those.

Washington stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Washington wants it to stay on the feet.

It looks like Denver Washington has been cut.

Washington is breathing heavily.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Pilvi feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Washington is wriggling around but Pilvi manages to pass to half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Denver Washington has got the better of the ground game so far.
Pilvi works his foot free and advances to mount.
Washington sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though.

Pilvi is working for an americana but Washington has been sneaky and has managed to get back to half guard, whilst Pilvi was thinking about the submission.
Pilvi is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

Washington bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Pilvi's guard.

A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Washington.
It looked like Pilvi was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit.

Denver Washington seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Pilvi is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Washington defends well.
Pilvi is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Washington will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

Washington stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Pilvi swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Washington is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Washington is on top in guard.

Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Veikko Pilvi showed his dominance in that final round.
