PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Kazuto Kirigaya (ranked 5751 p4p, 0 weight class) and Viet Kong (ranked 5856 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Kazuto Kirigaya!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Viet Kong!
The judges for this bout are Sosuke Kotani, Hirohito Nitta and Kenichi Hosakawa.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Kong shoots in and bounces Kirigaya off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Kong throws a strike but Kirigaya rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Kong trying to keep a closed guard but Kirigaya is proving a slippery customer.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Kong can do anything to dispel that myth.
Kong trying to punch from his back but it's not doing any damage.
Kirigaya passes into half guard under a barage of strikes.
Kirigaya moves into side control, avoiding the strikes from Kong.
Kong is trying to control Kirigaya's posture but Kirigaya avoids it.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Kirigaya fails to land a wild elbow strike.
Kong tries to strike but it doesn't land.
Kong tries to control but end up mounted... ooooh, that's bad.
Kong really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Kirigaya. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Kong tries to hold on but Kirigaya postures up.
Kong avoids a series of strikes thrown by Kirigaya.

Kirigaya unloads with some shots from mount but Kong bucks and avoids them well.
Kong tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Kirigaya wants to control the pace but Kong is squirming around nicely.
Kirigaya avoids the attempt from Kong to control.
Kong is trying to reverse the position but instead Kirigaya has taken his back - oops!
Kirigaya wants to control but Kong is keeping busy.

Kong can't escape the position.
Kirigaya just keeping the dominant position. He can't wait too long though, otherwise the referee will stand them back up.

Kirigaya is looking to finish the fight by rear naked choke. Kong knows exactly what he's got planned though, so he's defending well. Maybe a few strikes would soften Kong for a finish.

I really don't envy Kong right now.

Kong keeps trying to improve his position.

You can see the frustration on Kong's face… He knows he is in trouble unless he improves his position sooner rather than later.

Kirigaya looking to break Kong's wrist control so he can sink in the choke. Kong remaining controlled and patient though - he really has to keep calm otherwise Kirigaya will wrap this one up with the rear naked choke!
Kong tries to roll but Kirigaya sticks to his back.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
You can see the frustration on Kong's face… He knows he is in trouble unless he improves his position sooner rather than later.
Kong just trying to survive but Kirigaya is wriggling into a better position, looking to finish.

Kong is still trying to improve position.
Good control from Kirigaya.
Kirigaya controlling well, preventing Kong from escaping the position.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Kirigaya working for a choke but Kong is defending well.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Kazuto Kirigaya dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Kong takes a swing at Kirigaya's ribcage but misses.
Kirigaya shoots for a double leg takedown but Kong sprawls well. He's pushed Kirigaya's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Kirigaya throws a right and a left that Kong avoids nicely.
Kirigaya looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Kong is fending him off so far but Kirigaya persists. Nope, Kong circles away and we're back to standing.
Kirigaya fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Kong avoids it really well and circles away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Kazuto Kirigaya. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Kong pushes Kirigaya up against the cage in a clinch.
Kong is looking for a takedown.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Kong tightens his grip and picks Kirigaya up, before dumping him to the ground. Kirigaya manages to land in guard.

Kong wants to control from the top but Kirigaya keeps moving.
Kirigaya not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Kirigaya wants to sweep but no luck.
Kong scoring with punches to the head and body.
Kong is looking to work some ground and pound but Kirigaya has wrist control.
Kong looking to sit in guard and control but Kirigaya gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Kong thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.
Kong preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.

Kirigaya decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Kong, up you get!
No luck for Kirigaya with that takedown attempt.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Kong closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
An uppercut on the inside fails to land for Kong.
Kong tries for a takedown but Kirigaya manages to get underhooks.
Kirigaya fails to pull guard.
Kong misses with the head strike.
Kirigaya drops down looking for an ankle pick but Kong pulls his leg out and moves away.

Kong closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
A head punch blocked on the inside by Kirigaya.
Kirigaya blocks a punch to the side of the head.
Kong is looking to take this one to the mat.
Kong misses with a short punch on the inside.
Kirigaya with an attempt at a knee that misses.
Kong gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Kirigaya.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Kong can't get the takedown.

Kirigaya breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Kirigaya tries to close the distance and clinch up but Kong swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Kong throws a jab but it's blocked by Kirigaya.
Kong leaves Kirigaya with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Kirigaya closes the distance and clinches up with Kong, looking for a takedown. Kirigaya pushes Kong against the cage but Kong circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Kirigaya slips under a jab from Kong.

Kong takes the fight into the clinch.
Kong swings away with an uppercut that misses.
Kirigaya drops down looking for an ankle pick but Kong pulls his leg out and moves away.

Kirigaya takes an elbow right on the bridge of the nose and winces in pain.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Viet Kong showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.


Kong tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Kirigaya was well out of range. Poor timing from Kong.

Kong rushes Kirigaya and presses him up against the cage.
A head punch on the inside from Kong fails to land.
Kirigaya changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Kong fights it off and pushes away nicely.

Kong throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Kirigaya tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Kong is in Kirigaya's guard.

Kirigaya has managed to wall walk up one of the corner posts to get back to his feet. Kong is pushing him up against the cage, looking to control the position.
Kong keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Kirigaya's efforts to push away.

Kirigaya is fighting off a takedown attempt but Kong is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Kirigaya to the mat. Kirigaya regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.

Kirigaya pushes Kong off and scrambles back to his feet.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Kong moves into the clinch.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Kirigaya has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Kong is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.
Kong tries to work over Kirigaya's body with a swooping hook but it only glances the target.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Kong throws a punch but it's blocked by Kirigaya.
Kong tries to score a body lock takedown but Kirigaya shows good agility there to stay on his feet.
Kirigaya wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Kong has him pressed against the cage.

Kong gets a nice trip takedown into half guard.

Kirigaya has managed to escape just enough to sneak back to his feet but Kong is on him like a limpet, forcing Kirigaya back against the cage.
Kong is working on a leg, looking for a takedown but Kirigaya is defending well.

Kirigaya decides to pull guard.
Kong scoring with some ground and pound.
Kong slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

Kong working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Kirigaya's head.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Kong wants to pass the guard but Kirigaya is keeping the position.
Kong wants to control from the top but Kirigaya keeps moving.
Kong lands a couple of digs.
Kong must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Kong chips away with some ground and pound.
Kong scoring with punches to the head and body.
Kong looking to sit in guard and control but Kirigaya gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Kong is on top in guard.

Kong postures up and lands a big shot to Kirigaya's brow.

Kirigaya has momentary wrist control but Kong slips an elbow through the middle.
Kong cracks Kirigaya with a solid left hand.
Kong distracts Kirigaya with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
Kong is working Kirigaya over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.
Kong is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.
Kong trying to control but Kirigaya is working from the bottom.
Kong landing with the ground and pound.
Kong with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.

And that's the end of the fight!
Viet Kong comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Kong has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
