PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Jon Jones (ranked 5999 p4p, 0 weight class) and Matt Motts (ranked 6124 p4p, 0 weight class). Jones comes to the cage accompanied by Kygo ft. Ellie Goulding - Summer Love. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jon Jones!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Matt Motts!
The judges for this bout are Frank Dennis, Stewart Dunkirk and Robert Twigg.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Jones looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Motts!
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Motts can do anything to dispel that myth.
Motts is looking to regain half guard here but Jones keeps moving and retains side control.
Check out the look on Jones's face as he threw that strike - that's one determined fighter!
Motts manages to work his way to half guard, despite Jones's best efforts.
Motts is looking to control Jones's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Motts avoid being mounted?

Motts is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Jones scores with a couple of nice shots.

Jones stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Motts swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Motts seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
Motts tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Motts escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Jones gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Jones has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Jones cracks Motts with a solid left hand.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Jones accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Jones is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.
Jones stands up over Motts, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
Motts lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Motts wants to pass the guard but Jones is keeping the position.

Jones striking off his back but it's not causing Motts any problems.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Jones trying to strike from the bottom but really, it's not the best position to be doing that from!

Motts drops back looking for a leg! Jones is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Jones manages to kick Motts off! Motts jumps back into Jones's guard.
Motts passes Jones's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Jones tries to get to full guard but Motts has control of the leg.
Jones could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

Motts is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Jones defends it well.
Motts throws a big elbow that misses, also allowing Jones to regain full guard.

Motts looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
Motts wants to control from the top but Jones keeps moving.
Jones throws a couple of weedy looking strikes off his back.
Motts postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Jones wants to sweep here but Motts controlling him for the moment.
Jones avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Motts is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Jones will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
No luck for Jones with that takedown attempt.
Motts misses with an uppercut.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Jones.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jon Jones. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Jones shoots in but Motts avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Jones shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Motts pinned against the cage. Motts gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Jones has a takedown stuffed.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Jones ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
Jones shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Motts closes the distance and clinches up with Jones, looking for a takedown. Motts pushes Jones against the cage but Jones circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Jon Jones will probably get the nod.

Jones might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Motts is on top in guard.

Jon Jones dominated that second round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.


Jones shoots in and drives through. Motts sprawls well.
It seemed like Motts was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it.
Nice takedown defense from Motts. No joy for Jones on that attempt.
Motts throws out a counter right but Jones avoids it with no problem.
Motts misses with an uppercut. Jones saw that one coming.

Motts gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Jones to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Jones keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Motts's head.

Motts has his foot on Jones's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Jones works his way back into a safe position though.

Jones is working Motts over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.

Jones has a momentary lapse of concentration, allowing Motts to throw up a leg and lock on what appears to be a pretty tight triangle! Jones is fighting it off but it's all too little too late - Motts pulls down on the head and he's put Jones to sleep! This one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:56 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle). Matt Motts!
