PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Julian Gray (ranked 6147 p4p, 0 weight class) and Que Jackman (ranked 8485 p4p, 0 weight class). Que Jackman will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Julian Gray!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Que Jackman!
The judges for this bout are Tiny Johnson, Chris Downing and Wesley Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Gray shoots in and bounces Jackman off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.

Gray drops back looking for a leg! Jackman is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Jackman manages to kick Gray off! Gray jumps back into Jackman's guard.

Gray not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Gray postures up and lands a big shot to Jackman's brow.
Gray is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

Jackman tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Gray slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Jackman trying to keep a closed guard but Gray is proving a slippery customer.

Gray got a little sloppy there for a moment and Jackman has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Gray has managed to get both his arms back between Jackman's legs - danger averted.
Gray controls from within his opponent's guard.

Gray is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Gray is stalling in the full guard.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Gray.

Jackman gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily

and Gray counters with a takedown into side control.

Gray decides to stand up, so the ref orders Jackman to his feet.
Gray really is a fat lump.

Jackman has managed to clinch.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Gray manages to break the clinch.
Jackman tries for a takedown but Gray sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

Gray moves into range and clinches up with Jackman.

Gray has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Jackman is trying to keep an underhook but Gray manages to get the takedown into half guard.
Gray takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.
Well, if Gray is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Gray has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Gray seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Gray in particular looking to stall.
This is a sustained period of stalling by Gray.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Julian Gray dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Gray closes the distance and takes a jab right on the nose as he does so.


It looks like Julian Gray has been cut.
Gray is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Jackman can do to turn this around?
Jackman misses with a head kick.
Gray throws a body punch but Jackman moves out of range.

Jackman drives through and clinches with Gray against the cage.

Gray breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Jackman looks for the body kick but Gray saw that one coming.
Jackman shoots in for a takedown but Gray shows good takedown defense.
Gray drops down looking for a counter takedown but Jackman sprawls and moves away.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Nice sprawl there from Gray as Jackman shoots in.
A counter left hand to the body from Gray misses its target.

Gray fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Jackman, pushing him back against the cage.
Jackman tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Gray smiles and moves away.
Julian Gray has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Que Jackman.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Some bone on bone action there as Gray checks a low kick. Luckily it wasn't a particularly hard one.

Jackman instigates a clinch.
Jackman wants to break the clinch but can't.

Gray is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Jackman can't fight it off and eventually Gray manages to take the fight to the floor. Jackman looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Gray controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Gray works a leg free and moves into half guard.

Gray is looking for a kimura but Jackman is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Gray to get the leverage.
Gray is figuring out what he wants to do next.

Gray wants to work for an arm triangle but Jackman is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Jackman pushes Gray off looking to stand but Gray dives back in and keeps control.

Gray seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Jackman for as long as he can get away with.

Gray wants to work for an arm triangle but Jackman is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

Gray in half guard on the top. He's looking for a kimura... He's got it locked and he's managed to free his trapped foot. Jackman tries to escape but it's on too tight and he has to tap! Great BJJ skills there from Gray!
