PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Douglas Flynn (ranked 25130 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jack Hughes (ranked 5970 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, Douglas Flynn!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Jack Hughes!
The judges for this bout are Richard Clark, Daniel Bishop and William Gold.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Flynn looking to score a takedown here. Hughes is defending well but Flynn drives through and ends up in Hughes's guard.
Hughes throwing some rather feeble looking strikes off his back.
Flynn throws a strike but Hughes rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Hughes has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Flynn is proving hard to escape from.
Flynn wants to get back to his feet but Hughes is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Flynn keeping moving, preventing Hughes from controlling successfully.

Flynn pushes Hughes off and scrambles back to his feet.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Flynn tries to clinch there but Hughes circles away.
Flynn tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Hughes was well out of range. Poor timing from Flynn.

Hughes has managed to clinch.

Hughes lands an elbow inside that Flynn shrugs off.


It looks like Douglas Flynn has been cut.

Flynn decides to pull guard.

Hughes stands up from guard. Let's bang!
Hughes avoids the clinch attempt nicely.

Hughes fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Flynn, pushing him back against the cage.

Hughes successfully pulls guard.
Hughes throwing some rather feeble looking strikes off his back.
Hughes is striking but Flynn is not phased and passes to half guard.
Flynn stops Hughes from getting back to his feet.

Flynn looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Hughes with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Flynn really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Flynn stops Hughes from getting back to his feet.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Hughes regains full guard, whilst avoiding punches from Flynn.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Hughes is wriggling around but Flynn manages to pass to half guard.
Flynn with a momentary lay and pray from half guard.
Flynn will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Hughes is looking to escape.

Flynn performing his best blanket impression for a moment.
Hughes is looking to get back to is feet but Flynn passes into side control.

Hughes is looking to get back to his feet here but Flynn is keeping cool and he's managed to take Hughes's back.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Flynn throws a big right hand but he misses and hits the mat. Ouch.
Hughes tries to escape the position.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Flynn misses with an elbow to the head.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Flynn blocks a head kick by Hughes.
As Hughes tries to get set, Flynn tries to push him back and clinch up but Hughes manages to avoid the attempt.

Hughes takes the fight into the clinch.

Hughes's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

Flynn pushes Hughes up against the cage in a clinch.

Hughes pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Hughes clinches with his opponent.
Flynn wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.
Flynn dodges an elbow strike from Hughes.
Hughes changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Flynn fights it off and pushes away nicely.

Hughes closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Hughes lands in his opponent's guard.

Flynn scrambles and gets back to his feet.

Flynn shoots in but Hughes avoids the takedown attempt easily.

Hughes forces Flynn back against the cage and clinches.

The fight stays on the outside here - Flynn looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Hughes closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Hughes is nestled in close to Flynn, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
Hughes is trying to control the action in half guard but Flynn is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Hughes frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.

Flynn makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Flynn.

Hughes won't allow Flynn to get back to his feet.
Hughes must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Flynn is working an open guard so Hughes takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Hughes pushes Flynn off but Flynn dives into side control.
Hughes is looking to reverse the position.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.

Flynn postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.
Hughes is looking to regain half guard here but Flynn keeps moving and retains side control.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Hughes has taken the fight to the clinch.
Hughes's corner are urging him to control the action in the clinch for a moment, rather than mount any serious offense. I'm sure the crowd appreciate those instructions... not.
Flynn is trying to force a seperation but Hughes has the dominant position.
Flynn drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.

Flynn closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Hughes did well to prevent Flynn getting side control.
Flynn thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Flynn misses with a head shot. Hughes uses the momentum to regain guard.

Hughes wants to stand but Flynn is controlling the position.
Hughes takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

The fighters are working up against the cage. Hughes manages to wriggle his way back to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched against the cage.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
