Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Rigoberto Vargas!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Tomo Jr Iii!
The judges for this bout are Emerson Jorge, Thiago Cunha and Edson Gomes.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Vargas has taken the fight to the clinch.
Vargas really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Vargas manages to get underhooks and slows down the pace for a moment.

Vargas is trying to work for a kimura but Jr Iii is defending well.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Vargas lands a nice short elbow.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Vargas looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Jr Iii with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.

Jr Iii is looking for a sweep. Vargas is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Vargas looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Jr Iii with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.

Vargas decides to stand up and try his luck on the feet.

Vargas is stalling here. The referee will be looking to step in if he doesn't pick up the pace.

Vargas tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Vargas has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Jr Iii is trying to control Vargas's posture but Vargas avoids it.
Vargas cracks Jr Iii with a big elbow.

Vargas wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Jr Iii, who protects the arm well.

Vargas stands up and we're back to a striking position.

Jr Iii feints and as Vargas raises his hands in defense, Jr Iii changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Vargas pulls Jr Iii in close to his closed guard and prevents Jr Iii from doing any damage or advancing position.

Vargas is pulling down on Jr Iii's head. It's preventing any offense from Jr Iii, at least for the moment.

Vargas tries to keep at a distance but Jr Iii has taken the fight into the clinch.
Vargas is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Jr Iii can do to turn this around?

Vargas is trying to trip Jr Iii. He has hold of a leg but Jr Iii is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Vargas persists though and gets the takedown into guard.

Vargas is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.

Jr Iii manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Vargas manages to get himself to full guard.

Vargas seems keen to control Jr Iii's posture.

Vargas doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.
Jr Iii wants to control from the top but Vargas keeps moving.
Vargas pulls Jr Iii in close to his closed guard and prevents Jr Iii from doing any damage or advancing position.

Vargas is looking for a triangle here but Jr Iii uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.

What's Vargas going to do here then? He's in a bit of a pickle.
Vargas has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Vargas regains half guard there - taking advantage of Jr Iii's attempt to lay and pray for a moment.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Vargas is doing well to avoid being mounted. He's controlling the position at the moment.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Vargas takes the fight into the clinch.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
The fighters are pressed against the cage, as the pace of the fight slows.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Vargas's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!



Jr Iii gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.
Vargas using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Jr Iii has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.

Vargas connects with a couple of short punches.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Vargas decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Jr Iii, up you get!

Jr Iii shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Jr Iii was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

Vargas sneaks out the side door and pushes Jr Iii away - he's back to his feet. The crowd show their appreciation for the escape.
Jr Iii takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Vargas closes the distance and pushes Jr Iii back into the cage.

Vargas lands a takedown into guard.

Jr Iii kicks Vargas off and gets to his feet.

Vargas instigates a clinch.
Vargas has Jr Iii pushed against the cage.
Vargas just leaning against Jr Iii, taking a breather.

Jr Iii ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Jr Iii no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

Jr Iii looks to be working for a triangle here. Oh, it looks like he might have it! Vargas has picked Jr Iii up and slammed him! Jr Iii can't keep hold of the triangle and Vargas manages to pass to side control!

Vargas has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.

Jr Iii throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Vargas tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Jr Iii is in Vargas's guard.

Vargas kicks Jr Iii off and gets to his feet.

Vargas closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Jr Iii's guard.
Jr Iii is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Vargas dives into side control.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Vargas looks up at the clock and then as Jr Iii takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, Vargas smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!

Vargas has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.

Well Vargas has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
