PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Patrice Pothier (ranked 8242 p4p, 668 weight class) and Roddy Piper (ranked 2629 p4p, 304 weight class). Chooooooooon! I think Pothier might be my favorite fighter, now he's come out to Numb. Piper has chosen Roddy entrance as his entrance music. Roddy Piper has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Patrice Pothier!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, Roddy Piper!
The judges for this bout are Roger Salmon, Chris Saunders and Jeff Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Pothier gets caught napping as Piper dives in and scores a takedown. Pothier manages to retain guard.
Piper preventing the sweep.
Piper with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
Piper has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Pothier is proving hard to escape from.
Pothier looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Pothier lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Pothier throws a strike but Piper rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Piper engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Pothier pulls Piper in close to prevent any damage.

Pothier definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight.

Pothier on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Pothier tries to get out of the position.
Piper throws a big right hand that misses.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Piper wants to control from the top but Pothier keeps moving.
Pothier can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Piper controls the pace.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Piper has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat.

Piper closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Pothier did well to prevent Piper getting side control.
Pothier is refusing to be controlled, as Piper sits in half guard.
Pothier has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Piper is working away from the top position though.

Piper working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.

Piper seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.

Piper is actively looking for submissions here but good counter grappling here from Pothier as he works his way to full guard.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Pothier pulls Piper in to control the position.
Piper controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Piper keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Pothier's head.
Piper sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Pothier's guard.
Piper is taking a breather. Pothier says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

Piper is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Piper thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Pothier's head.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Roddy Piper dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Piper fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Pothier feinted with a counter takedown.
Pothier tries to clinch up.

Piper closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Piper is keen to just control but Pothier is a slippery customer.

Piper throws a big elbow that misses.

Piper stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Pothier swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Piper has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Pothier controls Piper momentarily but Piper frees himself.

Pothier is working an open guard so Piper takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.

Piper shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Pothier manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Pothier avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Piper wants to control from the top but Pothier keeps moving.

Piper gets to his feet. Pothier looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
Pothier will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Patrice Pothier is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Piper shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Pothier napping and manages to drive through into side control!

Piper tries for a kimura but Pothier is defending well.

Piper goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Pothier rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Piper's guard! Nice work there by Pothier!
Pothier advances to half guard.
Piper is looking for a sweep. Pothier is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Piper is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Pothier's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Pothier's back!
Piper really has the hooks in deep now - there seems like no escape for Pothier.
Pothier trying to control the hands but Piper breaks the grip.

Pothier is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Piper is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.
What can Pothier do to escape this position? He's going to have to figure it out pretty quick if he wants to stay in the fight!

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Piper is working really hard to secure the rear naked choke. Pothier defends successfully for a significant amount of time. Both fighters are looking very determined.
Will Piper go for the finish here or will he try and keep control of the position?

Piper might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Pothier haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.

Piper is looking for the choke from the back position but Pothier is controlling his hands well.
Piper is controlling the position but Pothier somehow manages to roll and ends up with half guard.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Pothier is refusing to be controlled, as Piper sits in half guard.

Roddy Piper showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!

Piper shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Piper was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Piper content to stall in guard here.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Piper looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Pothier tries to get to full guard but Piper has control of the leg.
Piper content to control rather than advance.
Piper looks to land a strike but Pothier avoids it nicely and regains full guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Pothier keeping moving, preventing Piper from controlling successfully.
Piper has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Pothier is proving hard to escape from.

The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
Piper advances to half guard.
Piper lands strikes from half guard.

Piper is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Pothier is just riding it out for now. Piper eventually gives up the hold.

Patrice Pothier has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Roddy Piper is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Piper has gone for a leg lock! Pothier slips out almost immediately though and dives into Piper's guard.


And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Roddy Piper.
Well Piper has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

Roddy Piper decided to go for the less than humble approach in his post fight interview, telling everyone how he is going to conquer the world. The crowd seemed to like it when really that sort of approach could have gone either way.
