PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Stephen Christian (ranked 6169 p4p, 0 weight class) and Viggo Hansen (ranked 6031 p4p, 0 weight class). Hansen has chosen The Devils Bleeding Crown as his entrance music. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Stephen Christian!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Viggo Hansen!
The judges for this bout are Johanna Lukiainen, Matti Vanhoillinen and Roosa Järviläinen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Hansen moves into range and clinches up with Christian.

Christian pulls guard.

Christian has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Hansen off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.

Hansen fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Christian, pushing him back against the cage.
Christian tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Hansen smiles and moves away.

Christian closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Hansen did well to prevent Christian getting side control.

Christian is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Hansen doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Christian.

Christian is looking for a kimura here.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Christian thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Hansen's head.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Christian perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.

Christian has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Christian prevents Hansen from improving his position.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Christian will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Christian is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!



Hansen gets a clinch.

Hansen gets a trip takedown into half guard.

Christian has managed to escape just enough to sneak back to his feet but Hansen is on him like a limpet, forcing Christian back against the cage.
Hansen is trying to slow down the pace in the clinch, to catch his breath.

and Hansen counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Christian gets tackled into the cage by Hansen. Hansen maintains the clinch.
Hansen utilising his Muay Thai to score with a knee to the body.
Hansen is stalling here. The referee will be looking to step in if he doesn't pick up the pace.

Christian decides to pull guard.

Hansen scoring with some ground and pound.

Hansen gets to his feet. Christian looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!

Hansen clinches.

Hansen is trying to trip Christian. He has hold of a leg but Christian is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Hansen persists though and gets the takedown into guard.

Hansen decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Christian, up you get!

Hansen gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.

Hansen's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

Christian bucks up and manages to escape back to his feet!
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

This has been an exciting period of action!
Christian connects with a lovely jab that went straight through the gap between Hansen's hands.
Hansen throws a body kick but he wasn't in range.
Christian attempts a counter takedown but Hansen avoids it well and moves away.

Christian is scooting his butt against the cage and has managed to get back to his feet. Hansen presses him back against the cage, presumably looking to take the fight back to the mat.

Stephen Christian overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Christian is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Hansen avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Christian with a flurry of punches that miss.

Christian drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Hansen manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Christian has Hansen in his guard.

Christian slips a jab and a cross from Hansen.
Hansen throws a body kick, spinning off balance

and Christian counters with a single leg into guard. Hansen didn't expect that.
Hansen is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Christian dives into side control.

Christian staying calm.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Christian is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Hansen has escaped the position, nice work there.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Stephen Christian will probably get the nod.
That's time! Back to the action! This is the final round!


Christian fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Hansen avoids it really well and circles away.

Hansen drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.

Christian bucks up and manages to escape back to his feet!
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Hansen rushes Christian and presses him up against the cage.

Christian escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Viggo Hansen seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Hansen manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Christian on his heels. He'll look to pass Christian's guard now, I'm sure.

Christian pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Hansen rushes Christian and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.

Both guys are working to get underhooks.

Christian breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Hansen fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Christian to the ground. Hansen is now in Christian's guard.

Christian has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Hansen off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.

Christian tries to keep at a distance but Hansen has taken the fight into the clinch.

Hansen jumps into guard, dragging Christian to the mat.
Hansen can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Christian controls the pace.
Hansen not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Christian is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
This is a sustained period of stalling by Christian.

Christian drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Hansen manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Christian has Hansen in his guard.

Hansen pushes Christian up against the cage in a clinch.

Christian has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Hansen uses from the top position.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Stephen Christian.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Christian, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
