PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Asa Franco (ranked 25218 p4p, 0 weight class) and Taolin Karanko (ranked 6323 p4p, 0 weight class). On his way into the cage it seems that Asa Franco has been attacked by a crazed fan! It looks like it might have been the just bleed guy! Luckily Asa Franco seems to be OK! I thought that lunatic was in prison!?

Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Taolin Karanko!
The judges for this bout are Yukihiro Shimada, Hirohito Nitta and Shigeki Sano.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Franco clinches up against the cage.
Franco has Karanko pressed against the cage.

Franco's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Karanko connects with an inside leg kick.
Franco lands a slapping body shot.
Franco uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Karanko.
Karanko throws a series of punches but Franco moves out of range.
Franco is looking to counter the offense by Karanko and move into the clinch.

Franco looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Karanko!

Franco stands up.
Karanko fails to land the takedown.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Karanko looks for a takedown but Franco sprawls well.

Franco tries to keep at a distance but Karanko has taken the fight into the clinch.

Franco breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Karanko shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Asa Franco has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Taolin Karanko.
Franco fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Karanko throws a left and a right that both miss
and Franco counters with a leg kick.
Karanko lands with a kick to the temple. Franco shrugs as if to say "is that all you've got?"


It looks like Asa Franco has been cut.
Karanko tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Franco swivels and escapes.

Franco drives through with a takedown into Karanko's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Karanko tries to strike from the bottom.
Karanko has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Franco drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Karanko dives on top into guard.

Franco wants to sweep but no luck.
Karanko throws a big right hand that misses.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Karanko in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Franco might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Karanko is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

Karanko trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.

Karanko wants to control from the top but Franco keeps moving.
Karanko's corner is telling him to maintain position.
Karanko loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Karanko cracks Franco with a nice right hand that draws applause from the crowd.
Karanko gets off balance looking for a body kick

and Franco counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Karanko wants to sweep but no luck.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Karanko is on top in guard.

Franco looking to hit a scissor sweep but Karanko is one step ahead there.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Taolin Karanko will probably get the nod.
The cut man is working on Asa Franco's cut.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Karanko shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Franco counters with a nice uppercut.

Franco manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Karanko on his heels. He'll look to pass Karanko's guard now, I'm sure.

Karanko pushes Franco off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.
Franco slaps away a takedown attempt from Karanko, before circling back to the center of the mat.

Karanko has taken the fight to the clinch.
Franco wants to break free but Karanko has control.
Franco has had enough of the clinch but Karanko keeps him there for the moment.
The pace slowing considerably in the clinch, as Karanko takes a break from that fighting nonsense to think about the finer things in life.

Franco wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
Karanko scores with a nice hook to the head.

Karanko fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Asa Franco has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Taolin Karanko.
Franco shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Karanko as he jumps to the side.
Karanko tries to score a power double leg takedown but Franco sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Karanko somewhat.

Franco misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Karanko is defended easily by Franco.
A decent looking cross lands there for Karanko.
Asa Franco is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Karanko has managed to clinch.
Karanko jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Franco walks away with a smile on his face. Karanko gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.

Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Franco.

Karanko has managed to clinch.
Karanko can't get the takedown.

Franco shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Franco was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Karanko tries to get back to his feet but has found himself mounted instead. Damn, that's gotta suck.

Taolin Karanko has got the better of the ground game so far.

Franco looking to secure an arm triangle but Karanko defends it well.
Franco can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Karanko is looking to escape.

Franco is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Karanko is surviving well by controlling Franco's body position as best he can.

Franco thowing shots but they're missing.
Karanko tries to get back to half guard but can't.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Taolin Karanko will probably get the nod - 10:9.

Franco looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Karanko is fending him off so far but Franco persists. Nope, Karanko circles away and we're back to standing.

Karanko escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Karanko closes the distance and pushes Franco back into the cage.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Karanko lands a nice elbow from the clinch.
Franco is looking to break free of the clinch but Karanko has double underhooks.
Karanko is working for takedown but Franco is calmly controlling the position for now.

Karanko jumps guard and drags Franco to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.

Franco avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Karanko takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Franco controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Karanko is trying to control the position from the bottom.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Karanko fails with the takedown.
Karanko will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Horrible takedown attempt by Franco or perhaps it was just good defense by Karanko, which made it look bad.

Karanko is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched.
Karanko drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Franco gets the underhooks and prevents it.
Karanko tries to work over Franco's body with a swooping hook but it only glances the target.

Well Karanko has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
