PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Willem Kriel (ranked 2935 p4p, 386 weight class) and Simon Marcus (ranked 2710 p4p, 369 weight class). Kriel's entrance music is Jack Parow & Freshlyground - Army Of One. A fine choice. Both fighters will be looking to make this an exciting fight for the fans, I'm sure!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 10 - 12 - 0, fighting out of New York, Willem Kriel!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 8 - 0, fighting out of New York, Simon Marcus!
The judges for this bout are Johanna Lukiainen, Ben Zyskovitsi and Roosa Järviläinen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Marcus changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Kriel tries to avoid it but Marcus manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Kriel to the ground. Kriel escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Kriel defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Marcus.
Kriel half committed to a counter leg kick.
Marcus changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Kriel tries to avoid it but Marcus manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Kriel to the ground. Kriel escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Kriel tries to counter by moving into the clinch but Marcus manages to circle out of the way.
Willem Kriel has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Simon Marcus.

The fighters circle momentarily. Marcus darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch.
Kriel leaves Marcus with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Marcus wants to take the fight to the mat but Kriel manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.

Kriel tries to work over Marcus's body with a swooping hook but it only glances the target.
Kriel tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage.
Marcus fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Kriel tried to land a shot to the body but connects with Marcus's elbow.
Kriel looking to throw knees to the head but Marcus is blocking nicely.
Kriel lands a left hand that snaps the head of Marcus backwards.
Marcus's coach down at BLOODSPORT GYM was telling us pre-fight that they have been working on Marcus's balance. Obviously they view that as a key factor in the outcome of this fight.

A head punch on the inside from Kriel fails to land.
Kriel gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Marcus.

Marcus is working on a leg, looking for a takedown but Kriel is defending well.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Kriel tries to get to full guard but Marcus has control of the leg.
Marcus is controlling the pace.
Marcus wants to lay and pray for a moment but Kriel keeps working.

Kriel wants to get back to full guard.
Kriel avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Marcus.
Kriel wants to improve his position but Marcus is controlling well.
Kriel is doing well to avoid being mounted. He's controlling the position at the moment.

Marcus is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Kriel defends it well.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Marcus is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Kriel is just riding it out for now. Marcus eventually gives up the hold.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Kriel is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Marcus shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Kriel napping and manages to drive through into side control!

Kriel explodes and escapes back to his feet! Nice escape there!

Kriel is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Marcus can do to turn this around?

Marcus throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Kriel was covering up waiting for the punch and Marcus finishes the takedown easily into guard.

Kriel has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Marcus is working away from the top position though.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Kriel wants to control from the top but Marcus keeps moving.

Marcus is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Kriel is aware though and is defending well.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Willem Kriel will probably get the nod.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!

Marcus tries to score a power double leg takedown but Kriel sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Marcus somewhat.
Kriel wants to take advantage of his opponent's missed offense by moving into the clinch.

No luck with that takedown attempt from Marcus.

Marcus takes a nice looking leg kick right on the meat of his thigh there.

Kriel lands a left and a right that send Marcus crashing to the mat, dazed. Kriel thinks about following him to the mat but decides to wave him back up to his feet!


It looks like Simon Marcus has been cut.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Kriel wants to control but Marcus is keeping busy and won't allow it.

Marcus seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Kriel does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Marcus is fighting to break Kriel's control of his arms but Kriel is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.

Kriel scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Marcus doesn't seem bothered though.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Kriel, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

Willem Kriel spent the whole post fight interview bigging himself up. It didn't go down that well with the fans after a while as they thought it was a bit arrogant.
