PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Troy Wren (ranked 7499 p4p, 694 weight class) and Alex Wright (ranked 25387 p4p, 822 weight class). Wright comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Warped Mind kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Troy Wren!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Alex Wright!
The judges for this bout are Yuuki Gou, Yasuomi Hirokawa and Yukihiro Shimada.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Wren with a lazy takedown attempt
and Wright counters with a series of strikes. Wren will be more careful next time no doubt.
Nice takedown defense from Wright. No joy for Wren on that attempt.
Wright lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Wren backs up against the cage.
Wren lands a jab followed by a nice looking cross.


It looks like Alex Wright has been cut.
Wright misses with a few strikes there.
Wren tries to score a power double leg takedown but Wright sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Wren somewhat.
Wright unleashes a big counter combination but Wren bobs and weaves and avoids any damage.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Troy Wren. That's going to take a lot out of him.

and Wright counters with a right hand to the body.
Wren tries to clinch there but Wright circles away.
Wright wants to counter with a clinch but Wren pushes him away.
Wright cracks Wren with a nice right hand that draws applause from the crowd.
Wren shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Wright defends it nicely.

Wright throws a head kick that half lands.
Wren misses with a leg kick.
Wright scores with a kick to the midsection.
Wright closes the distance and clinches up with Wren, looking for a takedown. Wright pushes Wren against the cage but Wren circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Horrible takedown attempt by Wright or perhaps it was just good defense by Wren, which made it look bad.

Wright has managed to clinch.
Wright drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Wren gets the underhooks and prevents it.
Wren fails to pull guard.
Wright tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Wright is pressed up against the cage. Wren has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Wright down to the mat. Wright avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Wren has a takedown stuffed.
Wren lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Wright circles away quickly and effectively.

Wright shoots for a double leg takedown but Wren sprawls well. He's pushed Wright's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Wren shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Wright as he avoids it easily.

Wright closes the distance and pushes Wren back into the cage.

Wright pulls guard effortlessly.

Wren drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Wright dives on top into guard.

Wren wants to sweep but no luck.
Wren is trying to hold Wright in close to prevent damage but Wright has managed to pass into half guard.
Wright with a momentary lay and pray from half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Alex Wright dominated that round.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.



Wright has Wren up against the cage in a clinch.
Wren is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Wright pulls him back up using the underhooks.

Wright pulls guard effortlessly.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Wren looking to sit in guard and control but Wright gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.


Wright got a little sloppy there for a moment and Wren has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Wright has managed to get both his arms back between Wren's legs - danger averted.
Wright has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Wright decides he's had enough of the ground and stands up.

Wren takes a head kick and shrugs it off.
Ooooh, nice body kick lands from Wright. Wren shrugs it off though.
Wright plants his feet and lands a nice head kick!
Wright shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Wren pinned against the cage. Wren gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
As Wright looks to move away, Wren throws a big counter combo but Wright just gets out of the way.

Wright misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Wright will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Troy Wren has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Alex Wright.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Wright shoots in looking for a takedown. Wren tries to sprawl out of it but Wright keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Wren manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Alex Wright showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!


Wright gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Wren counters with a left and a right that stings Wright.

Wright gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Alex Wright has got the better of the ground game so far.
Wright is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Wren trying to control the position from guard on top but Wright is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Wren stands up from Wright's guard - Wren perhaps looking for a knockout.

Wright closes the distance and clinches.
Wright takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Wright prevents Wren from breaking the clinch.
Wren has had enough of the clinch but Wright keeps him there for the moment.
Wren is working on a leg, looking for a takedown but Wright is defending well.
Wren has a couple of punches blocked by Wright.
A real battle for position is taking place between these two warriors.
Wren pushes off and fires off an elbow that misses, before clinching up again, against the cage.

Wright breaks from the clinch.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Wright has managed to clinch.
Wren prevents the takedown attempt.

Wright breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Wren tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Wright paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Wren gets tackled into the cage by Wright. Wright maintains the clinch.
Wren wants to break free but Wright has control.
Wren is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.

Wright's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Wren misses with a series of wild punches.
Wright blocks a head kick by Wren.

Wren leaves Wright with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Troy Wren has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Alex Wright.

Wren's corner calls for a 1-2. Wren obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Wren tries to close the distance and clinch but Wright swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Wren misses with a combination

and Wright moves into the clinch.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Wright fails to pull guard.
Wren tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Troy Wren has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Alex Wright is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Wright blocks a knee to the body. He'll have a nicely bruised forearm in the morning.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Alex Wright.
Well Wright has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

Alex Wright spent the whole post fight interview bigging himself up. It didn't go down that well with the fans after a while as they thought it was a bit arrogant.
