PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Aron Lee (ranked 25677 p4p, 0 weight class) and James Lion (ranked 6565 p4p, 0 weight class). Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Aron Lee!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, James Lion!
The judges for this bout are Steve Erwin, Topper Green and Hugh Johnson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Lion clinches up with Lee and pushes him back against the cage.
Lion tries to land knees in the clinch but Lee avoids the damage to the body.
Lion slows down the pace here.

Lion tightens his grip and picks Lee up, before dumping him to the ground. Lee manages to land in guard.
Lion won't allow Lee to get back to his feet.
Lee will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Lee utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Lee has his feet on Lion's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Nice work.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
No joy there for Lion, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Lee shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Lion as he jumps to the side.

Lion gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Lion pushes Lee off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Lee fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Lee moves out of the way of the counter high kick fromLion.
Lion stuffs the takedown attempt from Lee. Lee gets slowly back to his feet.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Aron Lee. That's going to take a lot out of him.
A head kick by Lion misses

and Lee counters with a nice double leg into side control. Lion won't be happy with that.

Lee decides to stand back up. Lee steps back and let's Lion get back to his feet.

Lion gets in close and instigates a clinch.

Lion successfully pulls guard.
We're hearing some news coming in from back stage. It's official - Lion has eaten all the pies!
Lion has a closed guard, preventing Lee from standing up.
Lion really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Lee. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Lion controls Lee momentarily but Lee frees himself.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Lion working for a triangle but Lee defends it easily.

Lion looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Lion looks winded!
Lee postures up and lands a big shot to Lion's brow.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Lion is looking to stand up but Lee isn't so interested in that idea.
Lee in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Lion is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Lee is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.

Lee stands and steps away. Lion gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

Lion misses with a body punch
and Lee counters with a flying knee. Nice.

Lion closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.

Lee has one foot on Lion's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet.

Lion closes the distance and clinches.

Lee jumps guard.

Lee pushes Lion off and gets back to his feet.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Lee shoots in and bounces Lion off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.

Lee distracts Lion with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
Lee wants to stand but Lion has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Lee stands up from guard. Let's bang!
Lee tries to close the distance and clinch but Lion swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Lion has managed to clinch.
Lee wants to take the fight to the mat but Lion manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.
Lion prevents the takedown attempt.
Lion just leaning against Lee, taking a breather.
Lee drops down looking for an ankle pick but Lion pulls his leg out and moves away.

Lion closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Lion lands in his opponent's guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Aron Lee will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!



Lion shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.

Lion stands up from Lee's guard - Lion perhaps looking for a knockout.

Lee closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Lee lands in his opponent's guard.

Lion throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Lee was covering up waiting for the punch and Lion finishes the takedown easily into guard.

Lee wants to stand but Lion is controlling the position.
Lee is trying to keep Lion in close.

Lee has scooted to the edge of the canvas and used the cage to get back to his feet. Lion has stuck on his opponent and is forcing him back against the cage.
Lion stops a takedown attempt from Lee.

Lee is trying to force a seperation but Lion has the dominant position.

Lion gets double underhooks and manages to take the fight to the ground.
Lee wants to stand but Lion is controlling the position.
Lee is pulling down on Lion's head. It's preventing any offense from Lion, at least for the moment.
Lion wants to stand and escape but instead Lee has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.


Lee gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
James Lion is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Lion looking to score a takedown here. Lee is defending well but Lion drives through and ends up in Lee's guard.
Lion is breathing heavily.

Lion decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Lee, up you get!
Lee shoots in but Lion avoids the takedown attempt easily.

Lee drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Lee tries to stand but Lion is controlling from the bottom.
Aron Lee overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Lee stands up from guard. Let's bang!
A solid leg kick lands there for Lion.

Lee pushes Lion off and gets back to his feet.

The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Lion gets a clinch.

Lion pulls guard effortlessly.

Lee decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
Lee throws a right and a left that both miss.
Nice shot by Lion.
Lion slaps away a takedown attempt from Lee, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Lion lets it all go there with a big combo counter but none of the punches connected.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Aron Lee will probably get the nod.
That's time! Lee's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!

Lion ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Lion no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

Lee tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.

Lee is trying to drag Lion to the mat but Lion just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.
Lee goes for a body shot but it's blocked.

Lion keeps control of Lee as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.
Lion is trying to stall.
Lee has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Lion after a bit of a struggle.

Lion is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Lee can't fight it off and eventually Lion manages to take the fight to the floor. Lee looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.

The fighters are working up against the cage. Lee manages to wriggle his way back to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched against the cage.
Lion takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Lee breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
James Lion seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Lee tries to close the distance and clinch up but Lion swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Lion drives through with a takedown into Lee's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.

The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Lee decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Lion, up you get!
Lee connects with a good right hand that stumbles Lion. Lion circles away out of range and recomposes himself.

Lee feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Lee gets to his feet. Lion looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!

Lee keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Lion's efforts to push away.

Lee looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.

Lee really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
The fighters are pressed against the cage, as the pace of the fight slows.

Lion pulls guard.

Lion wants to sweep but no luck.
Lee chips away with some ground and pound.
Lee postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Lee gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
No luck for Lee with that takedown attempt.

Lion clinches.
James Lion has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Aron Lee is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Lion lands a right uppercut that snaps the head of Lee backwards.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to James Lion.
I think Lee has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
