PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Eustace Elpidius (ranked 6186 p4p, 314 weight class) and Freddie Mercury (ranked 24848 p4p, 465 weight class). Elpidius's ring entrance music is that housewives' favourite, Gladiator - Hans Zimmer. Mercury has chosen Imperial March (L.O.D. Rage Mix) as his entrance music. Eustace Elpidius has the edge in experience - let's see if he can make that count tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Eustace Elpidius!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Freddie Mercury!
The judges for this bout are Shigeki Fujiwara, Yukihiro Shimada and Yasuomi Hirokawa.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Elpidius avoids the head kick by Mercury.
Mercury throws a right high kick that is partially blocked by Elpidius.
Mercury throws a sloppy head kick and Elpidius moves out of range easily.
Mercury lands with a head kick! That's gotta hurt.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Elpidius is defended easily by Mercury.

Elpidius tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Mercury was well out of range. Poor timing from Elpidius.

and Elpidius decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Mercury's guard.

Elpidius is in a tricky position. We've heard reports from his gym mates at Shinto Elite MMA Academy that he's been drilling escapes, so let's see if he can get back to his feet.
Mercury wants to stand and escape but Elpidius is having none of it.

Elpidius is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

Elpidius stands and throws Mercury's legs to the side, diving into side control.
Mercury really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Elpidius. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Elpidius is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.

Elpidius has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

Mercury felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Elpidius thows a huge punch but Mercury dodges it nicely.

Mercury can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Elpidius controls the pace.
Elpidius postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.
Elpidius seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

Freddie Mercury dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Mercury throws a quick head kick that skims the top of Elpidius's head.
Elpidius tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Mercury swivels and escapes.
Mercury swings wildly with a couple of big hooks

and Elpidius counters with a single leg into guard. Mercury didn't expect that.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
No joy there for Elpidius, who threw a few shots but didn't land.

Elpidius appeared to be looking to counter that last move with a leg kick.

Freddie Mercury showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! And we move into the final round!

Elpidius throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Mercury was covering up waiting for the punch and Elpidius finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Elpidius stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Mercury swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Elpidius is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.

Elpidius wants to pass the guard but Mercury is keeping the position.
Mercury wants to stand and escape but Elpidius is having none of it.
Elpidius not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.

Elpidius takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.

Horrible takedown attempt by Elpidius or perhaps it was just good defense by Mercury, which made it look bad.

Mercury bobs and weaves and then throws a good body kick.
Mercury is using his reach advantage to land shots from outside his opponent's range.
Mercury throws a right hand that Elpidius ducks under and follows up with a left that Elpidius also avoids with ease.

Elpidius closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Mercury to the mat! Mercury manages to get full guard.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Freddie Mercury is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Mercury takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Eustace Elpidius.
I think Mercury has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
