PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Ronald Rousey (ranked 2484 p4p, 262 weight class) and Riza Rakija (ranked 2619 p4p, 266 weight class). Rousey comes to the cage accompanied by Creepy Jackalope Eye by Supersuckers. The crowd seem to be enjoying Rakija's choice of entrance music: Rakija. Riza Rakija is staring across the cage at his opponent, tweaking his nipples.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 24 - 26 - 1, fighting out of St Petersburg, Ronald Rousey!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 13 - 12 - 1, fighting out of Tokyo, Riza Rakija!
The judges for this bout are Aleksei Zolotukhin, Igor Prikhodko and Konstantin Menshow.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Rousey throws a hook to the side of Rakija's head but Rakija sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Rousey keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Rakija dips down and scores with a jab to the body.
Rousey's corner calls for a 1-2. Rousey obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range.

Rousey closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Rakija quickly recovers to half guard.

Rousey is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

Rakija is staying active underneath Rousey, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

We've been hearing good reports from Rousey's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.

Rakija displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Rousey throws out the jab.
Good leg kick by Rousey there. It's the ones that make that thud noise that hurt and that was an almighty thud.

Rakija gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Our spies down at at Hellfire Antechamber inform us that Rakija has really been working on his submissions in the buildup to this fight. Will it pay off?
Rousey throws an elbow that misses. Rakija uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Rousey's guard. Nice move by Rakija!

Rousey is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Rakija defends well.

Rakija drops back, looking for a kneebar! Rousey looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Rousey looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Rousey!

Rakija can't do much from the bottom here.
Rousey is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Rakija can do to turn this around?

Rousey thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Rakija is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.

Rakija bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.

and Rakija counters with a straight right hand.
Rakija paws at his opponent with the jab and then lunges in with a straight, right on the button.

Rousey avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Rakija finds nothing but air with that leg kick attempt.
Rousey feinted there with a counter leg kick.
A decent looking cross lands there for Rakija.
Ronald Rousey seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Rakija throws a leg kick which misses Rousey's front leg but catches the back leg as Rousey tries to avoid it.
Ronald Rousey is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Rakija leaves Rousey with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Rakija fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Rousey has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage.
Riza Rakija has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Ronald Rousey is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Rakija has closed the distance and engaged Rousey in a clinch.
Rousey tries to break the clinch but Rakija is controlling the position.
Rakija goes for a takedown attempt but Rousey pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.

Rakija bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Rakija is working to tighten his grip on Rousey's neck. He's isolated an arm and is working for an arm triangle. Rousey has recognised the danger and is trying to turn with the submission but Rakija is really squeezing tight and eventually Rousey passes out! Rakija breaks the hold and jumps onto the cage to celebrate! Submission of the night, I'd say!

A very excited looking Riza Rakija made sure he remembered to thank all the fans both in the arena and on the internet. He said all the coolest people spend all day on MMA websites, which got a big reaction.
Ronald Rousey was interviewed post fight and said 'My hat's off to my opponent. He fought a great fight and won fair and square. I'm glad we were able to put on an exciting fight for you fans. Give it up, people!'.
