PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Marcus Camby (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ryan Griffin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Marcus Camby!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Ryan Griffin!
The judges for this bout are Chris Saunders, Colin Fray and Josh West.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Griffin takes a swing at Camby's ribcage but misses.
Griffin wants to clinch.
Ryan Griffin seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Camby shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Griffin lands with a good body shot.
Griffin scores with a hook to the body. Camby takes a step back and tries to catch his breath.

Camby gets caught flat footed, as Griffin shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Camby looking to hit a scissor sweep but Griffin is one step ahead there.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Griffin stands up over Camby, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
Griffin has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Camby is proving hard to escape from.

Griffin wants to control from the top but Camby keeps moving.
Griffin postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Griffin tries to free his leg and advance position but Camby is retaining full guard.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Griffin thuds a left hand into Camby's body.
Griffin displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Camby.
Griffin throws a jab when Camby was well out of range.

A clash of legs there as Camby blocks the low kick.
Griffin lands with a slapping head kick.

Griffin closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Griffin lands in his opponent's guard.

Griffin drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Camby manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Griffin has Camby in his guard.

Camby seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Griffin holds on and takes a little breather.
Camby throws a big elbow that misses.

Griffin working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Camby doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Camby manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Griffin lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Griffin throws an elbow that misses. Camby uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Griffin's guard. Nice move by Camby!

Griffin manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Camby manages to get himself to full guard.


Camby has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Griffin can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Griffin forces his way into half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ryan Griffin dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Camby tries to close the distance and clinch up but Griffin swats him away and circles back towards the center.
A low kick from Griffin misses
and Camby counters with a series of strikes. Griffin will be more careful next time no doubt.
Griffin is looking to clinch but Camby is avoiding it.
Camby shoots in and drives through. Griffin sprawls well.
Griffin throws a right hand that Camby ducks under and follows up with a left that Camby also avoids with ease.
Griffin tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Griffin wants to land a leg kick but Camby is out of range.
A combination from Griffin does no damage.
Griffin throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Camby sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Griffin tries to score with an inside leg kick but telegraphs it and Camby is able to avoid easily.

Camby fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done.
Camby tries to clinch but Griffin moves out of range.
Griffin misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Camby.
Griffin ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Camby moves away.

Griffin throws a leg kick that misses.
Camby fakes with a right hand and throws a good leg kick, right into the thigh. That had to hurt Griffin.
Griffin throws a nice hook to the body that draws an oooh from the crowd.
No luck for Camby with that takedown attempt.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Camby.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Marcus Camby. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Griffin shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Camby as he avoids it easily.
Camby seemed to be looking to counter by closing the distance.

Camby drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Griffin is looking to regain half guard here but Camby keeps moving and retains side control.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
A nice right hand lands inside from Camby.
Griffin wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Camby has him pressed against the cage.

Camby jumps into guard, dragging Griffin to the mat.
Griffin slips nicely into half guard.
Griffin wants to control but Camby is keeping him busy.
Ryan Griffin has got the better of the ground game so far.

Griffin is trying to get back to his feet now but his leg is trapped.

Camby is defending against the submission attempts here by Griffin.

A close second round but Ryan Griffin will probably get the nod - 10:9.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!


Griffin throws a body shot but no joy.
Griffin tries to close the distance and clinch but Camby swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Camby shoots for a takedown but Griffin saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Marcus Camby is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Griffin is defended easily by Camby.
Camby went nuts there looking for a big combo counter but none of the flurry connected.
Griffin lands a right hook to the body.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Griffin just misses with a punch to the body.
Camby looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Griffin is fending him off so far but Camby persists. Nope, Griffin circles away and we're back to standing.
Camby takes a body punch but keeps moving.
Griffin throws a head kick that Camby semi-blocks.

Camby feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Griffin is on top in guard.

Camby throws a big counter combination but Griffin scrambles out of danger and avoids any damage.

Griffin misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Camby fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Marcus Camby. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Camby fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.

Camby closes the distance and clinches.
Camby goes for a body shot but it's blocked.
Griffin working hard to break the clinch.
Griffin looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.
Camby gets through Griffin's defenses to land a nice punch to the side of the head.
Camby has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Griffin is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.
Camby jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Griffin walks away with a smile on his face. Camby gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.

Griffin lands a body shot.
Griffin throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Camby's waist but Camby gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Griffin off to one side.
We've been informed that Griffin has been working hard on his conditioning in the buildup to the fight.
Camby shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Griffin pinned against the cage. Griffin gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Griffin throws out a leg kick but Camby moves out of range and Griffin only half commits.
Camby is trying hard to land a takedown here. Griffin sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.

Camby takes a shot right to the bread basket.

Griffin fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Camby sprawls well initially but Griffin persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Griffin is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Camby has escaped the position, nice work there.
Camby is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Griffin's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.
Griffin is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.

Griffin is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Camby is just riding it out for now. Griffin eventually gives up the hold.

I've got Griffin winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
