PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Weldon Horton (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Angelo Curba (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Weldon Horton!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Angelo Curba!
The judges for this bout are Frank Dennis, Wesley Smith and Chris Downing.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Horton misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Horton shoots in looking for a takedown but Curba manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Horton's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Horton tries for a takedown but Curba sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Weldon Horton. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Curba scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
Curba is figuring out what he wants to do next.
Horton manages to get to full guard.
Curba must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Horton escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Curba gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Horton is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Curba is aware though and is defending well.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Curba is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
It looks like Curba might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Horton fails with the takedown.

Curba scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Horton is breathing heavily.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.

Horton really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Curba stands up out of the half guard.

Curba throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Horton was covering up waiting for the punch and Curba finishes the takedown easily into guard.

Horton pushes Curba off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Horton's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.

Curba stands and steps away. Horton gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

Horton is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Curba with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.

Curba is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Curba tries for a kimura but Horton is defending well.

Curba decides to stand back up.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Horton enables Curba to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Horton manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

Horton has managed to wall walk up one of the corner posts to get back to his feet. Curba is pushing him up against the cage, looking to control the position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Angelo Curba showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!

Curba has managed to escape just enough to sneak back to his feet but Horton is on him like a limpet, forcing Curba back against the cage.

Horton gets control of Curba's arms and successfully pulls guard. Horton will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
Curba is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

Curba gets to his feet. Horton looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Horton shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Curba as he jumps to the side.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Curba avoids the clinch attempt nicely.

Curba decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Horton tries to get to full guard but Curba has control of the leg.
Curba controlling the pace.
Curba trying to advance position but Horton counters by regaining guard.
Curba really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Horton. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Curba wants to stand but Horton has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Horton keeping moving, preventing Curba from controlling successfully.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

Horton scrambles and gets back to his feet.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Horton fails to land the takedown.
And an attempted straight right on the counter from Curba! But no joy.
Weldon Horton has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Angelo Curba is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

Horton gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
Angelo Curba comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Curba has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
