PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Donovan Bender (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Brandon Perry (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Donovan Bender!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Brandon Perry!
The judges for this bout are Marco Blurström, Anni Minnemäki and Tarja Halkonen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Perry shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Bender but Bender pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Bender gets caught napping as Perry dives in and scores a takedown. Bender manages to retain guard.
Perry stays in close to Bender's body and controls the position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Bender is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Perry is aware though and is defending well.
Perry is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Perry must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Perry wants to pass the guard but Bender is keeping the position.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
Perry sitting in guard here, content to control.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Perry darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Perry connects with a nice short shot to Bender's temple.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Perry not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.

Bender actively working from the bottom here.
Perry with a momentary lay and pray from half guard.

Bender with the active half guard here but Perry passes nicely into side control.
Perry is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Bender will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.
Perry lands some shots froms side control.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Perry in side control, just content to control the action for now.

Perry thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Bender tries to bench press Perry off him but Perry keeps the position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Bender trying to remain calm as Perry controls from the top position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Bender tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Perry wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Perry looks up at the clock and then as Bender takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, Perry smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!
Bender is letting Perry control him for a moment.
Let's hope that Perry has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
Bender is trying to improve his position.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Perry takes a little break here. Bender wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Brandon Perry dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


No luck with that takedown attempt from Perry.

Perry shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Bender napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Brandon Perry has got the better of the ground game so far.
Perry wants to lay and pray for a moment but Bender keeps working.
A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.
Bender pushes Perry away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Perry gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Perry is staying tight to Bender's torso, preventing him from escaping.
Perry's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
Bender is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here.
Bender could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

Bender is looking to regain half guard here but Perry keeps moving and retains side control.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
A jab from Perry does it's job there.
Brandon Perry seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Bender shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Bender showed some decent athleticism there.
Perry is trying to stand.
It looks like Bender is going to stand back up.
Bender wants to take a breather but Perry is having none of it.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Bender is figuring out what he wants to do next.
Perry trying to hold on to Bender's head to control him but Bender postures up.
Bender has decided to stand back up but his arm is trapped. Whilst he's worrying about his arm, Perry works to full guard.
Perry wants to stand but Bender is controlling the position.
Bender is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Perry clinches.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Perry stalling here - the referee won't stand for too much of that.

Perry turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control!
Bender wants to get back to his feet but Perry is dominant here and he's now got Bender's back!
Perry has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Perry is working the ground and pound here and the referee is taking a close look at Bender. He must escape soon or this one will be stopped.
Perry has the hooks in. Bender is trying to push off one leg but he has to do so cautiously to avoid being submitted.
Perry is controlling his opponent, waiting for an opportunity to finish.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Perry is continuing to stall.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Brandon Perry showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.



Bender forces Perry back against the cage and clinches.

Perry is trying to trip Bender. He has hold of a leg but Bender is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Perry persists though and gets the takedown into guard.

Bender is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Perry defends well.

Perry got a little sloppy there for a moment and Bender has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Perry has managed to get both his arms back between Bender's legs - danger averted.
Perry chips away with some ground and pound.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Perry passes Bender's left leg - he's now in half guard.
Well, if Perry is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

The adventures of Perry the control monster continue. Boring.
We're seeing a lot of stalling here from Perry.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Perry lands strikes from half guard.
Still in half guard, Perry seems content to control.
Bender on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound.
Nice strikes from Perry there.
Perry slows the pace down in half guard.
Yet more stalling tactics from Perry.
Perry scores with a couple of good hammerfists.
Perry controlling the action here.

Perry postures up and decides to stand up, from the half guard. The ref calls for Bender to stand up.

Bender looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Perry missing with punches from the bottom.
Perry tries to kick Bender off but Bender keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Perry can do anything to dispel that myth.
Bender seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Perry does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Perry flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.
Bender wants to stand but Perry has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.
Perry has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Bender is working away from the top position though.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

Perry darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Perry performing his best blanket impression for a moment.
Brandon Perry is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Brandon Perry comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Perry has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
