PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Ahmed Cantu (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Frank Burgos (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Ahmed Cantu!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Frank Burgos!
The judges for this bout are , Don Winkell and Jack Bonds.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Burgos closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Burgos lands in his opponent's guard.
Cantu trying to control the position.
Burgos wants to control from the top but Cantu keeps moving.
Cantu might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Cantu has Burgos pulled in close to control his posture.
Cantu avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Cantu is trying to keep Burgos in close.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Burgos wants to control from the top but Cantu keeps moving.
Burgos not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Burgos closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Burgos lands in his opponent's guard.
Burgos looking to sit in guard and control but Cantu gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Burgos holds on and takes a little breather.
Cantu stands up over Burgos, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
Burgos controls Cantu momentarily but Cantu frees himself.
Burgos throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.

Cantu working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.

Cantu works over Burgos with some ground and pound from guard.

Cantu stands and steps away. Burgos gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

Burgos gets a double leg takedown into Cantu's guard.
Cantu trying to strike from the bottom but really, it's not the best position to be doing that from!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Burgos slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Cantu is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Cantu could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Cantu has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
Burgos stopping the sweep attempt from Cantu.

Cantu has his foot on Burgos's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Burgos works his way back into a safe position though.

Cantu is looking for a triangle here but Burgos uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Cantu is looking to regain half guard here but Burgos keeps moving and retains side control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Cantu can't do much from the bottom here.
Cantu manages to work his way to half guard, despite Burgos's best efforts.

Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Burgos wants to control but Cantu is keeping him busy.
Cantu makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Cantu.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.



Burgos fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Cantu sprawls well initially but Burgos persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Cantu wants to control but Burgos is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Cantu keeps control of the position for the meantime.
Burgos seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Cantu regains full guard. Nicely done.

Cantu manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Burgos manages to get himself to full guard.


Cantu decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
Burgos tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.

Burgos closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Cantu's guard.
Burgos must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Burgos forces his way into half guard.
Cantu is staying active underneath Burgos, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Burgos might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Cantu haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Cantu swinging wildly here.
Burgos closes the distance but Cantu moves to the side
and Cantu counters with a leg kick.
Burgos misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Cantu is trying to close the distance and clinch up, after that failed offence from Burgos.
Burgos pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Burgos tries to clinch but Cantu moves out of range.
Burgos lands a jab-cross combination.


It looks like Ahmed Cantu has been cut.

Burgos misses with a wild body shot.

Burgos feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Burgos is breathing heavily.
Burgos is stalling in the full guard.
Cantu lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Burgos wriggles free and stands up.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Cantu rushes Burgos and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Frank Burgos showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!



Burgos bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
The strikes coming from Burgos are missing the target in this wave of attacks.

Cantu is looking to regain half guard here but Burgos keeps moving and retains side control.

Burgos looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Burgos wants to take a breather but Cantu is having none of it.

Cantu is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.

Cantu pulls Burgos in close to prevent any damage.
Burgos stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Cantu swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Cantu will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.
Cantu not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
Cantu is really struggling to control Burgos but he's trying to hold on to the position.

Cantu throws a sloppy head kick and Burgos moves out of range easily.
Burgos avoids the head kick by Cantu.

Burgos dives in and scores a takedown into Cantu's guard.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

I've got Burgos winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
