PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Aaron Hall (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Benny Cortez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Cortez has chosen Brazilian Fight Song by Stephane Attias as his entrance music. Aaron Hall had a look across the cage there at his opponent. He definitely means business

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Aaron Hall!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Benny Cortez!
The judges for this bout are Matheus Silva, Leandro Rodrigues and Felipe Paraventi.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Hall gets a takedown into half guard.
Hall could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Hall is taking a breather. Cortez says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Cortez is trying to maintain the position but Hall is very close to passing his half guard.

Hall is working for a submission of some sort.
Cortez taking some punishment here, with Hall in his half guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Hall in particular looking to stall.

Hall wants to pass the guard but Cortez is defending well.
Cortez is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Cortez is looking to control Hall's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Cortez avoid being mounted?
Hall with a momentary lay and pray from half guard.
Hall is thwarting Cortez's attempts to control the position.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Cortez slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.
Hall landing with the ground and pound.
Hall trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

Hall engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Hall shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Cortez is trying to defend but Hall finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Hall lands a nice short elbow.
Hall is looking for the mount but instead finds himself back in full guard.
Hall wanted to stand there but Cortez had control of the position.

Hall gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Hall.
Cortez is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Hall's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Hall is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Cortez sees it coming and defends easily.
Cortez wants to get back to full guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Cortez tries for a takedown but Hall sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

Hall shoots in for a takedown and gets it.

Cortez is trying to stand up here but Hall is controlling him well.
Hall seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Hall is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Cortez has managed to free his arm - good work.
Hall content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Hall working over Cortez with some ground and pound. Cortez looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.
Hall tries to stand but his arm is trapped.
Cortez is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Hall's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Hall's back!
Hall is in bad spot here.
Aaron Hall overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Hall knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Cortez on the ground.

Cortez is working hard for the rear naked choke here.
Hall wants to escape the position.

Cortez is not going to allow Hall to sit and survive in this position.
Hall can't escape the position.
Hall is trying to get back to his feet but Cortez has full control of the position and if anything, Hall has just worked his way into a worse spot.
Cortez throwing wild punches that miss their target.
Will Cortez go for the finish here or will he try and keep control of the position?
Hall is trying to break free.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Cortez avoiding Hall 's attempts to control his hands.
Cortez keeps control of the position as Hall tries to break free.

Hall defends a rear naked choke attempt by controlling one of Cortez's arms.
Hall might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Cortez looking to break Hall's wrist control so he can sink in the choke. Hall remaining controlled and patient though - he really has to keep calm otherwise Cortez will wrap this one up with the rear naked choke!
Cortez is breathing heavily.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Cortez controls the position.
Hall tries to escape the position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Benny Cortez showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!



Hall bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.

Cortez sneaks out the side door and pushes Hall away - he's back to his feet. The crowd show their appreciation for the escape.

Hall moves into the clinch.
Hall is defending well against a takedown attempt.

Cortez has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Hall uses from the top position.

Hall would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.

Hall gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.

Cortez misses with a two punch combination.
Hall looks for a takedown but Cortez sprawls well.

Hall manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Cortez on his heels. He'll look to pass Cortez's guard now, I'm sure.

Cortez has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Hall off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.
Cortez takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Hall shoots in for a takedown but Cortez shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.

Cortez tries to keep at a distance but Hall has taken the fight into the clinch.
Come on Hall - let's have some action - none of this stalling nonsense.
Cortez is looking to control Hall's arms but Hall gets an underhook and turns him. Now Cortez has his back to the cage.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Cortez tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Hall smiles and moves away.
Cortez defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Hall.
Cortez steps in looking to clinch after the strikes miss from Hall.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Aaron Hall. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Cortez shapes like he's going to throw a leg kick but settles back down.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Hall misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.

Hall has closed the distance and engaged Cortez in a clinch.

Hall jumps guard and drags Cortez to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Cortez trying to control the position from guard on top but Hall is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Cortez gets to his feet. Hall looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
Cortez feints and then cracks Hall's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Hall down.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Hall shoots in and gets a takedown into Cortez's guard.

Hall stands and steps away. Cortez gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

Hall doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Cortez moves into the clinch.
Cortez wants to break the clinch but can't.
Hall tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Cortez smiles and moves away.
Cortez moves in looking to clinch but Hall pushes him off.
Hall displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Cortez.

Hall drives through and clinches with Cortez against the cage.

Hall drags the fight down to the ground.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Aaron Hall.
I think Hall has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
