PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Gibesi Aymeric (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Josh Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Smith has chosen Swag Surfin as his entrance music. Aymeric is coming into this fight with a significant injury, which will no doubt have an effect on his cardio. Gibesi Aymeric has the edge in experience - let's see if he can make that count tonight.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Josh Smith!
The judges for this bout are Jorge Garcia, Lou da Vinci and Joseph Jones.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Smith scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
Aymeric is breathing heavily.
Smith wants to pass the guard but Aymeric is defending well.
Smith controlling the pace.
Smith is looking to take a break and control but Aymeric is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Smith content to control rather than advance.
Smith is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount!

Smith has hold of Aymeric's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Aymeric manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
Aymeric might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Aymeric defends a decent attempt at a guillotine from Smith.
Smith trying to control but Aymeric is having none of it.

Smith's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Smith cracks Aymeric with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
Aymeric tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Smith looking to control and managing it successfully.
Smith is landing with some decent strikes but Aymeric is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.

Despite being in the dominant position, Josh Smith just isn't active enough and the referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Smith shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Smith showed some decent athleticism there.
Smith passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Aymeric!

Smith tries to control but Aymeric wriggling away.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Aymeric is wriggling around trying to escape.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Smith has control of Aymeric's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Aymeric regains control of the situation pretty easily.
Aymeric keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Smith in mount throwing good strikes here, bouncing his opponent's head off the canvas.
Aymeric tries to reverse the position but Smith maintains control.
Smith lands a nice shot to the head.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Smith throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Jab, cross, leg kick. Nice combination by Smith!

Smith shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Smith was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Aymeric wants to hold on but Smith pushes him away.

Aymeric manages to regain half guard. Good work.
Aymeric wants to get back to full guard.
Aymeric missing with punches from the bottom.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Aymeric is staying active underneath Smith, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Aymeric makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Aymeric.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Aymeric had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Smith is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Aymeric Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Smith's back instead.

Smith defends a rear naked choke attempt by controlling one of Aymeric's arms.
Smith breaks Aymeric's hooks off and manages to turn into his guard.
Josh Smith has got the better of the ground game so far.

Aymeric working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Smith doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Smith manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Aymeric has his foot on Smith's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Smith works his way back into a safe position though.

Aymeric has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Smith can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Smith shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Aymeric's guard.
Smith wants to control from the top but Aymeric keeps moving.

Smith is trying to drag Aymeric to the mat but Aymeric just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.

Aymeric postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Smith is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Aymeric, into his guard.

Aymeric escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Smith gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Well Smith has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
