PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Ivan Vasilev (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ethan Wilson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Ethan Wilson told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Ivan Vasilev!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Ethan Wilson!
The judges for this bout are Jeff Smith, Paul Gruel and Roger Salmon.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Wilson moves into range and clinches up with Vasilev.
Wilson has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.
Wilson has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Vasilev after a bit of a struggle.
Vasilev wants to take the fight to the mat but Wilson manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.
Wilson is trying to break free.
Vasilev is working for takedown but Wilson is calmly controlling the position for now.

Vasilev has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Wilson regains guard immediately.
Vasilev has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Wilson is proving hard to escape from.
Wilson avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Vasilev is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Vasilev throws an elbow that misses. Wilson uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Vasilev's guard. Nice move by Wilson!

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Vasilev's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

Wilson throws a sloppy head kick and Vasilev moves out of range easily.

Vasilev has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Wilson is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.

Vasilev drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Wilson gets the underhooks and prevents it.

Vasilev works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.

Vasilev tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Wilson just stands there and leans against the cage.
Wilson gets underhooks to prevent Vasilev's takedown attempt.
Vasilev keeps control of Wilson as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.

Vasilev has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Wilson uses from the top position.

Vasilev leaves Wilson with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Wilson is breathing heavily.

Wilson moves into range and clinches up with Vasilev.
Wilson is trying to maintain a safe position but Vasilev gets an underhook and turns Wilson into the cage.

Vasilev seems keen to control Wilson's posture.
Vasilev has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Wilson drives through and clinches with Vasilev against the cage.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Vasilev has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Wilson uses from the top position.

Wilson is pressed up against the cage. Vasilev has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Wilson down to the mat. Wilson avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Wilson tries to land a knee to the head but misses.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Vasilev lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Vasilev accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Ivan Vasilev overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Wilson wants to stand but Vasilev is controlling the position.
Vasilev knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Wilson on the ground.
