PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Michael Collins (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mauricio Velasquez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Collins's entrance music is I'm Shipping Up To Boston - Dropkick Murphys. A fine choice. Velasquez has chosen Loonie - Balewala as his entrance music. Michael Collins has a significant reach advantage - let's see if he can make it count.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Michael Collins!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Mauricio Velasquez!
The judges for this bout are Ian Loll, William Peck and Yves DeLean.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Velasquez waving his hands out in front of him, looking to distract Collins.
As Velasquez looks to move away, Collins throws a big counter combo but Velasquez just gets out of the way.

Velasquez closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Collins quickly recovers to half guard.

Velasquez is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Still in half guard, Velasquez seems content to control.
Collins knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Velasquez on the ground.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Velasquez thows a huge punch but Collins dodges it nicely.

Collins really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Collins is trying to stand.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Velasquez.
As Velasquez looks to move away, Collins throws a big counter combo but Velasquez just gets out of the way.
Velasquez throws a nice looking combination but Collins bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.

Velasquez throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Collins tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Velasquez is in Collins's guard.
Velasquez stands and throws Collins's legs to the side, diving into side control.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Collins stops Velasquez from passing to mount.
A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.
Velasquez scores with a couple of short elbows.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Mauricio Velasquez dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.

and Collins counters with a three punch combo that has Velasquez backing up. Velasquez nods at Collins to acknowledge the strikes.
Michael Collins is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Velasquez closes the distance and clinches up with Collins, looking for a takedown. Velasquez pushes Collins against the cage but Collins circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Collins seem to be loading up, looking for a big counter.

Collins gets caught napping as Velasquez dives in and scores a takedown. Collins manages to retain guard.
Velasquez's corner is telling him to maintain position.

The referee tells the fighters to keep busy.
Velasquez looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.
You can see the frustration on Collins's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Velasquez misses with the ground and pound.

Velasquez decides to stand back up. Velasquez steps back and let's Collins get back to his feet.
Velasquez tries a head kick but it misses.

Velasquez closes the distance and clinches.

Collins pulls Velasquez into guard.
Velasquez sitting in guard, not really doing much.
Velasquez missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Velasquez is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

Velasquez is continuing to stall.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Velasquez pushes down on Collins's leg and manages to get into half guard.
Still in half guard, Velasquez seems content to control.
Velasquez throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Velasquez controlling the action here.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Velasquez shoots in and bounces Collins off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Collins wants to get back to his feet but he's too absorbed in his own little project and Velasquez manages to pass to side control.
Velasquez has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Velasquez content to control rather than advance.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Mauricio Velasquez showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!

A relieved looking Mauricio Velasquez thanked the fans for their support and gave the usual line about them being amazing. They seemed to believe that he actually meant it.
