PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Bobby Sands (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Greg Mac (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chooooooooon! I think Sands might be my favorite fighter, now he's come out to Irish Soldier Song ... Free & Green. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Bobby Sands!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Greg Mac!
The judges for this bout are Michael Johnstone, David Hoff and Sandra Marshall.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sands shoots in for a takedown but Mac shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Mac swings for the body but Sands moves out of range.
Sands feinted with a counter takedown.
Mac fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Sands has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage.
Sands shoots in but Mac avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Mac throws a head kick that misses.
Mac lands a jab followed by a nice looking cross.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Mac throws a right and a left that Sands avoids nicely.
Sands walks into a straight right hand from Mac.
Sands walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Sands fails with a takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Bobby Sands. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Mac slips in close and lands a nice hook before moving back out of range.
Mac throws a hook but Sands avoids it easily.
Mac just misses with a punch to the body.
Mac throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Sands dives in for a single leg takedown but Mac sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.

Mac looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.

Mac is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Sands.
Mac displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Sands.
Sands has been working on his balance at Harambe Remembrance Hall, so perhaps that has help him stuff some of the takedown attempts by Mac.
Mac throws an overhand right that lands on Sands's shoulder, as Sands tries to avoid the shot.
Mac misses the shot to the body.

Mac closes the distance and pushes Sands back into the cage.

Mac breaks the clinch.
Sands shoots in but no luck this time.
Sands shoots for a takedown but Mac saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Sands walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Mac with a body punch. A glancing blow.
Mac leaves Sands with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Sands shoots in looking for a takedown. Mac tries to sprawl out of it but Sands keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Mac manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Mac stuffs the takedown attempt from Sands. Sands gets slowly back to his feet.
Sands dives in and grabs Mac's left leg, looking for a takedown. Mac pushes down on Sands's head and hops out.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Mac lands the left hand.
Mac bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Sands's head.
Sands fails with the takedown
and Mac counters with a series of strikes. Sands will be more careful next time no doubt.

Mac has taken the fight to the clinch.
The pace really dropping off here, momentarily.
Mac lands with a right to the head.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Mac goes for a takedown attempt but Sands pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
Sands shoots in for a takedown but Mac shows good takedown defense.
Sands ducks right into an uppercut from Mac.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Greg Mac dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Mac goes to the watering hole and comes back with a big thumbs up from the judges as he scores a three punch combo.

Mac clinches.
Mac tries to work over Sands's body with a swooping hook but it only glances the target.
Sands is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.
Mac is pressed up against the cage. Sands has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Mac down to the mat. Mac avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.

Mac gets a clinch.
Mac gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Sands.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Bobby Sands. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Sands has Mac pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Mac manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.

Sands takes a shot to the body in his stride.
Horrible takedown attempt by Sands or perhaps it was just good defense by Mac, which made it look bad.
Sands takes one on the button.
Mac just misses with a punch to the body.
Mac misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Greg Mac is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
A punch lands to the side of Sands 's head but he takes it in his stride.
A left lands for Mac.

Sands shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Mac defends it nicely.
It seemed like Mac was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it.

Sands dives in and grabs Mac's left leg, looking for a takedown. Mac pushes down on Sands's head and hops out.
Mac throws out a counter right but Sands avoids it with no problem.

Mac gets underhooks to prevent Sands's takedown attempt.
Mac prevents a takedown attempt there.
Sands drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Mac gets the underhooks and prevents it.

Sands has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Mac regains guard immediately.
Mac has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Sands is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Sands thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Sands is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Mac is on top in guard.


Mac has gone for a leg lock! Sands slips out almost immediately though and dives into Mac's guard.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Greg Mac showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!


Mac darts in and out, connecting with a jab.
Sands changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Mac tries to avoid it but Sands manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Mac to the ground. Mac escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Mac looked like he wanted to counter with a punch but didn't throw it.
Mac scores with a nice one two combo and darts back out of range to avoid anything coming in the opposite direction.
Sands takes one on the button.
Mac misses with a hook. Sands ducked under it nicely.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Sands shoots in for a takedown but Mac shows good takedown defense.
Mac now looks to counter with a shot at the body.
Sands needs to keep his hands up - Mac had a free shot at his head there.

Mac moves into range and throws a combination. A nice jab followed by a hook to the body.
Sands avoids a lazy jab quite easily.

Mac fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Sands, pushing him back against the cage.

Mac works on Sands's body with a couple of short punches.
Mac tried to land a shot to the body but connects with Sands's elbow.
Sands wants a takedown but no success here.

Sands is working for takedown but Mac is calmly controlling the position for now.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Mac's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Sands shoots and misses
and Mac counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.

Sands gets tackled into the cage by Mac. Mac maintains the clinch.
Mac has used his reach advantage pretty well so far tonight.
Mac stays in close to his opponent and throws a right hand to the body.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Sands wants to take the fight to the mat but Mac manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.
Mac's corner are urging him to control the action in the clinch for a moment, rather than mount any serious offense. I'm sure the crowd appreciate those instructions... not.

Mac pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Mac will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

Sands is trying to drag Mac to the mat but Mac just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.
Mac lands a body punch - he's looking to wear down Sands.

Mac pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

No luck with that takedown attempt from Sands.
Mac let fly with a counter punch to the body but it didn't land.
Bobby Sands has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Sands throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Mac's waist but Mac gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Sands off to one side.
Mac is trying to avoid his opponent's strikes and get into the clinch.
Sands looks like he's developed a pretty tasty lump over his left eye. He'll need to avoid taking much more damage to that.
Mac lands a right hook to the body.

Sands is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Mac pulls him back up using the underhooks.
The referee is keeping an eye on Mac - much more stalling and he will separate the fighters.
Mac lands a right uppercut that snaps the head of Sands backwards.
Mac lands a shoulder strike that jolts his opponent's head backwards.
Greg Mac is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

Greg Mac comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Mac winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
