PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Jimmy Cathaway (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Joaquin Sosa (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Joaquin Sosa will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Jimmy Cathaway!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Joaquin Sosa!
The judges for this bout are Alexandre Firmino, Mauricio Rocha and Daniel Cesar.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Cathaway closes the distance and clinches.
Sosa jumps guard but Cathaway stands there with Sosa around his waist. Sosa gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Sosa is trying to pull guard but Cathaway turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.
The referee calls for Cathaway to work.
Cathaway stalling here - the referee won't stand for too much of that.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Cathaway tries to work over Sosa's body with a swooping hook but it only glances the target.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Cathaway turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Cathaway manages to end up in side control.
Sosa is trying to get back to half guard.
Cathaway advances nicely into full mount.
Cathaway looking to control and managing it successfully.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Cathaway has control of Sosa's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Sosa regains control of the situation pretty easily.
Sosa really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Cathaway. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Cathaway throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.

Cathaway has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

Cathaway seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Sosa for as long as he can get away with.

Cathaway quickly switches position and commits to an armbar! It's a big risk for Cathaway but it's paid off an Sosa is forced to tap! Nice work by Cathaway.
