PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between James Simeon (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rembrandt Schmidt (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Schmidt has chosen red barchetta- rush as his entrance music. Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Rembrandt Schmidt!
The judges for this bout are Ben Watson, Ben Hemmingworth and Ron Honeybunn.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Simeon takes a shot to the eye socket. That's gotta hurt.
We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Schmidt has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat.

Schmidt manages to break the clinch.

Simeon tries to pull guard but Schmidt won't allow it.

Schmidt's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

Schmidt gets caught napping as Simeon dives in and scores a takedown. Schmidt manages to retain guard.
Schmidt pulls Simeon in close to his closed guard and prevents Simeon from doing any damage or advancing position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Schmidt wants to stand but Simeon is controlling the position.

Simeon has gone for a leg lock! Schmidt slips out almost immediately though and dives into Simeon's guard.

Schmidt got a little sloppy there for a moment and Simeon has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Schmidt has managed to get both his arms back between Simeon's legs - danger averted.

Simeon seems to have improved his submission grappling technique since last time we saw him. Let's see if he can pull off a submission.
Schmidt wants to stand and escape but instead Simeon has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.

Schmidt wants to get back to his feet but Simeon is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

Simeon gets to his feet - Schmidt follows without any prompting.
A decent looking cross lands there for Schmidt.
Simeon darts in looking for a takedown but Schmidt gets double underhooks and turns Simeon into the cage.

Simeon goes for a double leg but Schmidt avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Schmidt continues to drive forward.
As Simeon backs off Schmidt throws a huge counter combo but Simeon manages to avoid it all.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for James Simeon. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Schmidt defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Simeon.

Simeon ducks right into an uppercut from Schmidt.

Schmidt lands a really nice looking cross but Simeon seems unphased.
Schmidt tests Simeon's chin there with a solid looking shot.
Simeon drops his hands momentarily and Schmidt takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head.
James Simeon seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Sloppy strikes from Schmidt. Those never looked like landing.
Schmidt stalks Simeon and leaps in with a furious combination of punches. Uppercuts and crosses smash into Simeon's face. Simeon staggers backwards, shaken.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Simeon manages to pull guard.
Schmidt wants to pass the guard but Simeon is keeping the position.
Simeon is trying to keep Schmidt in close.
Schmidt wanted to stand there but Simeon had control of the position.

Schmidt has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Simeon is proving hard to escape from.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Rembrandt Schmidt will probably get the nod.
That's time! Simeon's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.

Schmidt dips down and scores with a jab to the body.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Simeon.
A little jabbing left from Schmidt on the counter but it doesn't find it's target.
Simeon shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Schmidt as he jumps to the side.

Simeon has taken the fight to the clinch.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Donk. Schmidt catches Simeon right on the button with a cross.
Schmidt misses with the combination.
Schmidt throws a combination. Simeon tries to block but a couple of punches get through.
Nice straight punches there by Schmidt. You know Roy Jones Jr respects the hands of Schmidt.
Simeon looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Schmidt throws a couple of head shots and lands with the final one - a decent hook, which struck Simeon on the side of the head.
Schmidt might want to mix his strikes up a bit more. He's just going for head shots at the moment and that can become a bit predictable.
Simeon dives in for a single leg takedown but Schmidt sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Simeon closes the distance and clinches up with Schmidt, looking for a takedown. Simeon pushes Schmidt against the cage but Schmidt circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Schmidt has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Nice jab there from Schmidt.
Schmidt connects with a good right hand that stumbles Simeon. Simeon circles away out of range and recomposes himself.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Schmidt stuffs the takedown.

Nice combo by Schmidt! Oh, that's hurt him - Simeon falls to the canvas and Schmidt follows him into side control.

Simeon is rocked!

It looks like James Simeon has been cut.

Schmidt has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.
Oh Simeon is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
Simeon tries to get into range but Schmidt steps to the side and lands a beautiful hook that drops Simeon! He's faceplanted into the mat, ass in the air... he's out cold! That's an image he won't want to show his grandkids when he gets older! Schmidt scores the big KO victory!

Rembrandt Schmidt decided to hype himself up post fight. It was going well but he went on about it a bit too long and the crowd turned on him a little.
