PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jerrell Juarez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Johnny Ray (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Jerrell Juarez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Johnny Ray!
The judges for this bout are Seu Braga, Daniel Cesar and Mauricio Rocha.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Ray clinches with his opponent.

Ray breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Ray closes the distance and clinches up with Juarez, looking for a takedown. Ray pushes Juarez against the cage but Juarez circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
As Ray looks to move away, Juarez throws a big counter combo but Ray just gets out of the way.
Juarez misses with a head kick.

Ray instigates a clinch.
Juarez tries to land a knee to the body but he is off balance and Ray avoids it.
Ray jumps guard but Juarez stands there with Ray around his waist. Ray gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Ray on the defensive, avoiding the knees to the body.

Juarez pulls Ray into guard.
Ray has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Juarez is proving hard to escape from.
Ray trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Ray wants to control from the top but Juarez keeps moving.

Juarez looking for a guillotine here but Ray defends easily.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Ray has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Juarez is proving hard to escape from.
Ray won't allow Juarez to sweep him here.

Juarez is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Ray is aware though and is defending well.
Ray pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Juarez is keeping the position for now.

Juarez has his foot on Ray's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Ray works his way back into a safe position though.

Juarez pushes Ray off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.
Ray fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Jerrell Juarez has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Johnny Ray.
Ray darts in looking for a takedown but Juarez gets double underhooks and turns Ray into the cage.

Ray wanted to stand there but Juarez had control of the position.

Juarez had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Ray defends it easily.
Ray lands a couple of decent looking shots.

Ray stands and steps away. Juarez gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
Ray misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Ray swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Juarez throws a quick counter head kick but Ray was just out of range.

Ray drives through and clinches with Juarez against the cage.
Juarez misses with a body punch.
Juarez dictating the pace here, as the fighters clinch against the cage.
Ray tries to score a body lock takedown but Juarez shows good agility there to stay on his feet.
Ray tries to pull guard but Juarez forces him back to his feet, against the cage.
Ray drops down looking for an ankle pick but Juarez pulls his leg out and moves away.

Ray closes the distance and pushes Juarez back into the cage.

Ray's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

Ray forces Juarez back against the cage and clinches.
Juarez has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Ray after a bit of a struggle.

Ray jumps guard and drags Juarez to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Ray is striking from the bottom but Juarez uses the opportunity to pass into half guard.
Juarez is thwarting Ray's attempts to control the position.
Juarez takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Juarez tries to stand but his hand is stuck under Ray.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Juarez stalling.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Ray tries to kick Juarez off but Juarez keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Jerrell Juarez will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.



Ray closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Juarez did well to prevent Ray getting side control.

Juarez is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Jerrell Juarez overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Juarez is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.


Juarez is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

Ray wants to get back to his feet but Juarez is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Juarez accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Juarez is looking to stand up but Ray won't let him.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Juarez prevents Ray from getting back to his feet.
Ray is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Ray might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Juarez haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
Ray thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.

Ray is looking for a triangle but Juarez pushes his legs off easily.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Ray closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Ray connects with a nice short shot to Juarez's temple.

As Juarez backs off Ray throws a huge counter combo but Juarez manages to avoid it all.
Juarez stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Juarez wants it to stay on the feet.
Ray looks to land a combination but Juarez avoids it well.

and Ray counters with a stiff right hand.
Johnny Ray seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Juarez shoots for a takedown but Ray saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

Juarez leaves Ray with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Ray takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Ray really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Juarez. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Ray takes a couple of big shots there - the referee warns him that he has to defend himself better.
Ray is looking to slip a leg under and get half guard but Juarez is one step ahead and moves to full mount!

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Jerrell Juarez.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Juarez, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
