PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Tommy Wade (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Iolo Davies (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Iolo Davies told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 3 - 0, fighting out of London, Tommy Wade!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Iolo Davies!
The judges for this bout are James Ackerman, Daniel Bishop and James Glass.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Davies closes the distance and clinches.

Davies jumps guard and drags Wade to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Davies is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Davies has Wade pulled in close to control his posture.
Davies looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Davies keeping moving, preventing Wade from controlling successfully.
Wade is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Davies is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

Davies is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Wade throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Davies is pulling down on Wade's head to control his posture.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Davies rushes Wade and presses him up against the cage.

Wade pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
A head kick misses from Davies.
Davies tests Wade's chin there with a solid looking shot.

Davies shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.

Wade manages to create a bit of space in order to work his way back to his feet. Davies keeps hold of his opponent and drives him back against the cage.
Davies is trying to break the clinch but Wade is controlling him.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Wade blocks a knee to the body. He'll have a nicely bruised forearm in the morning.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
A frustrated look appears on Wade's face as he tries to break the clinch.
Davies is trying to force a seperation but Wade has the dominant position.

Davies has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Wade is trying to keep an underhook but Davies manages to get the takedown into half guard.
Davies wants to get back to his feet.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Davies in particular looking to stall.
Wade might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Davies thows a huge punch but Wade dodges it nicely.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Wade looks like he's trying to stand up.
Davies wants to take a breather but Wade is having none of it.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Davies in particular looking to stall.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

Davies decides to stand and escape the position.

Davies scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
Davies trying to control the position but Wade is working away.
You can see the frustration on Wade's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Davies wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Wade, who protects the arm well.
Wade wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done!

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Wade is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Davies has just dragged him back down to the mat.
Wade is trying to get back to half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Iolo Davies dominated that round.
That's time! Wade's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Davies misses with a wild combination.
It looked like Wade was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit.
Nice straight punches there by Davies. You know Roy Jones Jr respects the hands of Davies.
A kick lands to the mid section there for Wade.

Davies clinches.
Wade misses with some punches.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Wade jumps guard but Davies stands there with Wade around his waist. Wade gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Davies is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Wade can't fight it off and eventually Davies manages to take the fight to the floor. Wade looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Wade is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Davies defends well.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Davies accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Davies stands up and waves to Wade to follow him.
Nice takedown defense from Davies. No joy for Wade on that attempt.

Davies closes the distance and clinches.
Davies keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Wade's efforts to push away.

Davies pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Davies drives through and clinches with Wade against the cage.

Davies pulls guard effortlessly.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Davies is looking for a triangle but Wade pushes his legs off easily.

Davies is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Wade defends well.
Wade stays in close to Davies's body and controls the position.
Wade wants to control from the top but Davies keeps moving.
Wade seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

Wade is standing up over Davies. Davies looks to escape but Wade dives into side control.
Wade is chipping away with strikes.
Wade creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Davies sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.
Davies is pushing Wade's head away, looking to escape. Wade manages to hold on to the position though.
Davies is looking for a sweep.
Wade working away.
Davies sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.

Davies trying to control but Wade postures up.
Wade keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.

Wade is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Davies regains full guard. Nicely done.
Davies is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Davies is trying to keep Wade in close.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Davies throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Wade tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Davies is in Wade's guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Iolo Davies showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Wade's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!


Davies is looking to land body kicks.
Davies pushes forward with a 1-2 combination that forces Wade back to the cage. Davies follows up with a solid lead hook to the liver.

Davies moves into the clinch successfully.

Davies manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.
Davies is trying to keep Wade in close.
Davies is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.
Wade not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

Wade could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Davies trying to keep a closed guard but Wade is proving a slippery customer.

Davies drives through with a takedown into Wade's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.

Davies throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Wade works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Davies is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.
Wade controls Davies momentarily but Davies frees himself.

Wade wants to control but Davies is keeping busy.

Davies is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

Wade wants to sweep but Davies has passed to side control!

Iolo Davies comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Davies has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
