PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between DJ Penn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and decision master (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, DJ Penn!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, decision master!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Penn fails with a takedown attempt.
master throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Penn shoots in looking for a takedown. master tries to sprawl out of it but Penn keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. master manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Penn shoots in but master avoids the takedown attempt easily.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for DJ Penn. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Penn shoots in for a takedown but master shows good takedown defense.
master throws a series of punches but Penn avoids them all with ease.
decision master seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Some wild striking there from master.
Penn is looking to clinch.
Penn fails to land the takedown.
master fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.

master looking for a takedown here - he's got it.
master really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Penn. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
master pushing down on Penn's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work.
Penn has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. master is working away from the top position though.
master takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
master wants to stand up but Penn has a hold of him and won't allow it.
master is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.
master looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Penn with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
master tries to pass the half guard into mount. Penn knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

master is figuring out what he wants to do next.

Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with master in particular looking to stall.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

master not landing any meaningful shots this time.
master is controlling the pace.
Penn is looking to improve his position.
master seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Despite being in the dominant position, decision master just isn't active enough and the referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Penn gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily

and master counters with a nice double leg into side control. Penn won't be happy with that.
Check out the look on master's face as he threw that strike - that's one determined fighter!

Penn is looking to regain half guard here but master keeps moving and retains side control.

Penn is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
master is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Penn bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in master's guard.

master lands a decent punch to the body there.
master tries to land a sweep but no joy.
master is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

master wants to hit a switch here but Penn passes into full mount! Oh no, disaster for master there!
Penn with a couple of short strikes.
Penn throwing strikes here but master is writhing around nicely and avoiding any serious damage.
Penn wants to control the pace but master is squirming around nicely.

master is in all sorts of trouble here.
master is bucking up trying to escape but Penn cracks him with another couple of good strikes.
master is squirming around, avoiding Penn's attempts to control the action.
master in a bad spot here, taking shots to the head.
Penn tries to control but master wriggling away.
master is trying to reverse the position but instead Penn has taken his back - oops!
Penn is looking to control master but master is wriggling around and keeping busy.
Penn misses with an elbow to the head.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Penn has the hooks in. master is trying to push off one leg but he has to do so cautiously to avoid being submitted.

master defends a rear naked choke attempt by controlling one of Penn's arms.
master wants to escape the position but for the time being he's just trying to control the pace.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

decision master showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!

master throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Penn stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.
Jab, cross, leg kick. Nice combination by master!

master closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Penn to the mat! Penn manages to get full guard.
master trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Penn is trying to keep master in close.
decision master has got the better of the ground game so far.
master seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

Penn doesn't manage to clinch there - master circles away.
master throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
master swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Penn moves in looking to clinch but master pushes him off.
A combination from master does no damage.
Penn gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and master counters with a one-two to the body.

and master counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.

Penn trying to hold on to master's head to control him but master postures up.
Penn wants to get back to his feet.
master performing his best blanket impression for a moment.

Well master has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
