PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jeffery Abbott (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Billy Poole (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). On his way into the cage it seems that Jeffery Abbott has been attacked by a crazed fan! It looks like it might have been the just bleed guy! Luckily Jeffery Abbott seems to be OK! I thought that lunatic was in prison!?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jeffery Abbott!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Billy Poole!
The judges for this bout are Alan Glass, Robert Twigg and George Francis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Poole fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Abbott to the ground. Poole is now in Abbott's guard.

Abbott has managed to wall walk up one of the corner posts to get back to his feet. Poole is pushing him up against the cage, looking to control the position.
Abbott tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.

Abbott with the Thai clinch. He's looking to land a big knee but he's not managed it this time.
Abbott is trying to force a seperation but Poole has the dominant position.
Poole has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Abbott after a bit of a struggle.

Abbott's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Poole will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
A head kick by Poole misses

and Abbott decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Poole's guard.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Abbott working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.

Abbott could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

Abbott has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Poole looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.

Poole has his foot on Abbott's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Abbott works his way back into a safe position though.
Abbott makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Abbott connects with a couple of short punches.

Abbott postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Abbott throws a big elbow that misses.
Abbott lands a couple of digs.
Abbott trying to control but Poole is working from the bottom.
Poole is trying to keep Abbott in close.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Poole rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Abbott moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Abbott throws a counter high kick but Poole was just alert enough to avoid it.

Abbott closes the distance and pushes Poole back into the cage.

Poole breaks the clinch.
Poole explodes with a nice body kick and back out of range. Nice work.

Abbott gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Abbott lands a short shot on the inside that snaps the head of Poole backwards.
Poole using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Abbott has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.

The fighters are starting to get sweaty, which will make takedowns a bit more tricky.
Abbott's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

Poole gets a clinch.

Poole keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Abbott's efforts to push away.

Abbott lands a nice trip takedown into half guard.

Poole pushes Abbott off and gets back to his feet.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Poole is clearly stalling here... Pick up the pace son.

Poole breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Poole swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Jeffery Abbott will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Good work by Abbott as he checks the leg kick.
Poole tries a head kick but it misses.
Poole cracks a nice hook into Abbott's ribs.
Poole shoots in for a takedown but Abbott shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Poole must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Poole is looking to pass into half guard but Abbott pushes him away with his feet and jumps on top - now Abbott is in guard.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Abbott scores with a couple of good hammerfists.
Poole tries to kick Abbott off in order to stand up. Abbott Avoids the leg push though and dives into side control.

Abbott tries to score with some ground and pound. Poole controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage.
Poole is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Abbott has just dragged him back down to the mat.
The referee asks Abbott politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Abbott prefers to stall for the moment though.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Poole fails with the takedown
and Abbott counters with a left to the body.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Poole misses with a takedown attempt - Abbott sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
A counter left hand to the body from Abbott misses its target.
Abbott changes levels and scores with a jab to the body.
Poole shoots in looking for a takedown but Abbott manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Poole's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Abbott tries to close the distance and clinch but Poole swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Billy Poole seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Abbott lands with a thumping leg kick.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Abbott's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!



The fight moves into the clinch position.
Poole is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Abbott pulls him back up using the underhooks.
Abbott is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.
Abbott prevents a takedown attempt there.
Abbott has not gone for a single takedown so far in this fight, which seems like a very strange tactic when you consider that he has the superior wrestling and BJJ.
Poole is trying to pull guard but Abbott has him pressed against the cage.

Well Abbott has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

Billy Poole was interviewed post fight and said 'I went out and gave 110 percent and sometimes it just isn't enough. I had a great opponent and this shows me I need to work harder and get better. I will keep pushing myself harder and harder and will see if I can pull off a win next fight.'.
