PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Gaius Julius Caesar (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Cain Velasquez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Caesar 's entrance music is Warriors of the World. A fine choice. Velasquez has chosen Kryptonite as his entrance music. Well, the cameraman is lingering on a pretty young lady for a bit too long there. Keep your eyes on the prize buddy or you'll miss the fighter intros!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 2 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 27 - 17 - 1, fighting out of Hilo, Gaius Julius Caesar !
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 22 - 15 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Cain Velasquez!
The judges for this bout are Skip Squint, Donatello Bradman and Bruno Hogan.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Velasquez looking for a takedown here - he's got it.

Velasquez is looking to work some ground and pound but Caesar has wrist control.
Caesar wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.
In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Velasquez working his ground and pound in the gym. He isn't landing a great percentage of his ground strikes so far though.
Velasquez has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Caesar is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Velasquez is controlling him.
Caesar is trying to control the position from the bottom.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.
Velasquez postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.
Caesar lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Velasquez wants to get back to his feet but Caesar is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Velasquez accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Caesar is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Caesar working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Velasquez doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Velasquez manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Velasquez connects with a nice short shot to Caesar 's temple.
Caesar is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Velasquez's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Velasquez's back!
Velasquez breaks Caesar 's hooks off and manages to turn into his guard.

Velasquez connects with a couple of short punches.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Caesar pushes Velasquez off and gets back to his feet.
Caesar is trying hard to land a takedown here. Velasquez sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
It seemed like Velasquez was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it.

Velasquez bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Caesar is in a tricky position but he's been working on his transitions down at Hilo MMA Academy , so we'll see if he gets out of it.

Velasquez might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Caesar haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.

Velasquez has worked his way into a potential kimura here. Caesar is trying to get out of the position but his squirming has just got him deeper into trouble. Velasquez yanks on the arm and Caesar is forced to tap due to a very painful looking submission! Nice work by Velasquez.
