PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between James Wolf (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Curtis Johnson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Johnson has chosen Voodoo Child by Jimi Hendrix as his entrance music. Well, the cameraman is lingering on a pretty young lady for a bit too long there. Keep your eyes on the prize buddy or you'll miss the fighter intros!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, James Wolf!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Curtis Johnson!
The judges for this bout are Jonathan Paton, Eddie Farnsworth and Chad Campbell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Johnson misses with a few strikes there.
Johnson tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Wolf defends well and Johnson ends up having to push Wolf into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
Wolf seemed to be looking to counter by closing the distance.
Wolf lands a right hook to the body.
Johnson throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Wolf.
Wolf moves in looking to clinch but Johnson pushes him off.
Wolf lands a lovely overhand right.
Wolf scores with a punch to the gut of his opponent.
Johnson fails to land the takedown.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Wolf leaves Johnson with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
James Wolf has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Curtis Johnson.
Johnson shoots in but no luck this time.
Wolf lands a slapping body shot.

Wolf moves to clinch but Johnson breaks away

and Johnson counters with a nice double leg into guard.

Johnson postures up.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Johnson is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Johnson pushes down on Wolf's leg and manages to get into half guard.

Wolf on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Wolf tries to get out of the position.
Johnson seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Johnson's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
Johnson trying to control the action but Wolf is working from the bottom.
Johnson thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Wolf's head.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Johnson is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Wolf sees it coming and defends easily.
Johnson trying to control the action but Wolf is working from the bottom.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Johnson thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Wolf's head.
Johnson is taking a breather. Wolf says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

Johnson seems to be working for a kimura but Wolf defends the submission attempt.
Wolf is concentrating on defense, preventing Johnson from advancing position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Johnson trying to pass the guard but Wolf defending well.
Johnson keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Wolf seems to be moving with more speed, compared to his last bout. He must have been working on that in the gym.
Wolf slaps away a takedown attempt from Johnson, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Johnson shoots and misses
and Wolf counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Wolf tries to clinch but Johnson is having none of it.
Johnson takes a shot right to the bread basket.
Wolf darts in and out, connecting with a jab.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that James Wolf will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.



Wolf closes the distance and clinches.
A right hook to the body lands for Wolf.
Wolf lands a nice uppercut.

Wolf breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Johnson has tried to improve his agility in the runup to this fight.
Johnson walks into a left hand.
Johnson tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Wolf swivels and escapes.
Wolf tries to counter by clinching up but Johnson breaks away and moves out of range.
Wolf connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Johnson.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Wolf clobbers Johnson with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.

A short body shot lands from Wolf as the two fighters clinch.
Wolf lands with a quick shot inside that doesn't really do much damage.
Johnson is still on wobbly legs! Can Wolf finish him?
Johnson is breathing heavily.

Johnson has Wolf pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Wolf manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.

Wolf breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Wolf fakes a head shot and lands one to the body.
Wolf lands an uppercut, right on the button! Johnson tumbles backwards into the cage, staring vacantly into space! He's got no idea where he is, who he is or what day it is... Poor guy.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:11 of round 2, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). James Wolf!
