PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Wendell Cunningham (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Zeus God (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Wendell Cunningham!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Zeus God!
The judges for this bout are Tiny Johnson, Cecil Peabody and Robert Twigg.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Cunningham closes the distance and clinches.
Cunningham wants a takedown.
Cunningham tries for a takedown but God manages to get underhooks.
Cunningham tries to pull guard but God won't allow it.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Wendell Cunningham. That's going to take a lot out of him.

God has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Cunningham is trying to keep an underhook but God manages to get the takedown into half guard.

God is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Cunningham avoiding damage under a succession of punches from God.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

God slips a nice elbow through Cunningham's hands, connecting with Cunningham's forehead.

Cunningham wants to control the action here but instead God manages to pass to full mount!

God is standing up out of mount! Strange tactic there - he must really want this one on the feet!
Cunningham really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

God closes the distance and clinches.

Cunningham in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.

God looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
God has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
God has Cunningham pulled in close to control his posture.
Cunningham looking to sit in guard and control but God gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

God engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.

God is fighting to break Cunningham's control of his arms but Cunningham is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
God chips away with some ground and pound.
Cunningham is looking to stand back up but God counters by passing into half guard. Oops... bit sloppy there by Cunningham.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Cunningham has hold of God's hands but God slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Zeus God dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Cunningham stuffs the takedown attempt from God. God gets slowly back to his feet.
God will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
God shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Cunningham defends it nicely.
Cunningham is looking to counter the offense by God and move into the clinch.
Wendell Cunningham has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Zeus God.
God throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Cunningham's waist but Cunningham gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing God off to one side.
God displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Cunningham.

God fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Cunningham manages to avoid it.

God is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
God is breathing heavily.

Cunningham is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Cunningham working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from God.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Cunningham is pulling down on God's head. It's preventing any offense from God, at least for the moment.
God trying to control the position from guard on top but Cunningham is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Zeus God is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
God swings for the body but Cunningham moves out of range.
Cunningham is looking to clinch.
God misses with a takedown attempt
letting Cunningham counter with a right hand.
God throws a chopping leg kick but Cunningham manages to avoid taking any serious damage.
Cunningham is looking to counter the offense by God and move into the clinch.

Cunningham misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
God lets it all go there with a big combo counter but none of the punches connected.

God clinches with his opponent.

Cunningham ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Cunningham no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
Cunningham wants to stand and escape but God is having none of it.
God controlling from the top position.
Cunningham keeping moving, preventing God from controlling successfully.

God slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
God in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Cunningham is wriggling around but God manages to pass to half guard.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
God takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
God wants to free his trapped foot but Cunningham is holding on for dear life with his legs.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Zeus God will probably get the nod - 10:9.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.

Zeus God has got the better of the ground game so far.

God is refusing to be controlled, as Cunningham sits in half guard.

God looking for submissions off his back.
The fighters are battling for position here. God manages to regain full guard. Nice work.

God utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
God is trying to control the position but Cunningham postures up.
Cunningham has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Cunningham throws an elbow that misses. God uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Cunningham's guard. Nice move by God!

God controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Cunningham is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

God decides to stand up, so the ref orders Cunningham to his feet.
God looks for a takedown but Cunningham sprawls well.
Zeus God seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Cunningham tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. God just stands there and leans against the cage.
Cunningham is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables God to keep the fight standing.
Cunningham jumps guard but God turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.

God is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.
Cunningham jumps guard but God stands there with Cunningham around his waist. Cunningham gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
