PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Louis Beard (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Diego Manuel Castillo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Man, I cannot wait for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Louis Beard!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Diego Manuel Castillo!
The judges for this bout are Don Winkell, Frank Antenori and Jack Bonds.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Beard tries to sprawl but Castillo drives through with a takedown into half guard.
Beard moves into full guard.
Beard trying to control the position here.
Beard looking for a sweep. Not yet Beard, not yet.
Beard bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Castillo's guard.

Beard will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Beard throws a big elbow that misses.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Beard trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Castillo is trying to control the position but Beard postures up.
Beard is stalling in the full guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Beard thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Castillo trying to keep a closed guard but Beard is proving a slippery customer.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Beard trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Castillo utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

Castillo escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Beard gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Beard drops back looking for a leg! Castillo is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Castillo manages to kick Beard off! Beard jumps back into Castillo's guard.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Beard accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Beard cracks Castillo with a solid left hand.
Beard postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.

Beard gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
Beard avoids the head kick by Castillo.

Beard bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.

Beard stands up and beckons Castillo to his feet.
Castillo tries to close the distance and clinch but Beard swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Castillo manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Beard on his heels. He'll look to pass Beard's guard now, I'm sure.
Castillo looks winded!
Castillo is fighting to break Beard's control of his arms but Beard is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
Beard's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Beard is on top in guard.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Beard working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Castillo's head.

Beard stands up from Castillo's guard - Beard perhaps looking for a knockout.

Beard has managed to clinch.
Beard tries to score a body lock takedown but Castillo shows good agility there to stay on his feet.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Beard breaks the clinch.
Beard really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Castillo tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Beard shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Castillo counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Beard thinking.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Beard.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Louis Beard. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Castillo defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Beard.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Castillo fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Beard to the ground. Castillo is now in Beard's guard.
Beard is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Louis Beard will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!



Beard gets caught flat footed, as Castillo shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Beard is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.
Beard wants to sweep but no luck.
Castillo stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Beard swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Beard is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Beard pulls Castillo in close to his closed guard and prevents Castillo from doing any damage or advancing position.

Castillo passes Beard's left leg - he's now in half guard.
Castillo trying to control from half guard but Beard is working away.
Beard is looking to control Castillo's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Beard avoid being mounted?
The fighters are battling for position here. Beard manages to regain full guard. Nice work.
Beard seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Castillo stopping the sweep attempt from Beard.
Castillo must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Castillo wants to pass the guard but Beard is keeping the position.
Castillo is breathing heavily.

Beard pushes Castillo off and gets back to his feet.

Beard gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.
Beard avoiding damage as Castillo throws knees to the body.

Beard jumps into guard, dragging Castillo to the mat.

Beard has Castillo pulled in close to control his posture.

Beard pulls Castillo in close to prevent any damage.
Beard is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Beard trying to control the action but Castillo is working from the bottom.
Beard perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.

Beard is looking for a kimura but Castillo is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Beard to get the leverage.
Beard passes into side control, despite Castillo's attempt to control the position.

Beard thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Beard decides to stand back up.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Castillo closes the distance and clinches.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Louis Beard dominated that second round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!


Beard shoots in and drives through. Castillo sprawls well.
Beard circles away from the clinch attempt.
Beard attempts a counter takedown but Castillo avoids it well and moves away.

Castillo shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Beard napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Beard is not content to let Castillo control the position.

Castillo is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Beard knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Beard is trying to control Castillo's posture but Castillo avoids it.
Castillo takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Beard regains half guard.
Beard tries to roll over but Castillo keeps him under control.
Beard makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Beard.
Beard manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Castillo manages to get himself to full guard.

Castillo has momentary wrist control but Beard slips an elbow through the middle.
Beard with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
Beard scoring with some ground and pound.
Louis Beard overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Beard thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Beard seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Beard postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.

Beard is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Beard thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Castillo pulls Beard in close to prevent any damage.

Beard not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Beard throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Castillo works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Beard uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Castillo.

Castillo darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Beard trying to control from the bottom.

Beard pushes Castillo off and gets back to his feet.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Beard closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Castillo is trying to escape back to his feet but Beard uses the scramble to pass into side control.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Beard is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Castillo knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Castillo is positioning himself to get back to half guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Louis Beard.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Beard, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
