PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Monty Wallace (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Gil Handerson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Monty Wallace!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Gil Handerson!
The judges for this bout are Paul Gruel, Roger Salmon and Ryoma Takatsuka.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Handerson gets caught flat footed, as Wallace shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.

Handerson pushes Wallace off and gets back to his feet.
Wallace tries for a takedown but Handerson sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Handerson stuffs the takedown attempt from Wallace. Wallace gets slowly back to his feet.
Handerson is loading up here, looking for a big counter of his own.

Handerson gets the takedown into side control.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Wallace regains half guard.
Wallace is trying to stand.
Handerson uses his free foot to push down on Wallace's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Wallace.
Wallace looking to escape from mount but he's given up his back!
Handerson thows a huge left but connects with the canvas and not his opponent.

Wallace can't escape the position.
Wallace manages to reverse the position and now he's in Handerson's guard. Nice work there by Wallace.

Handerson is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

Wallace gets to his feet - Handerson follows without any prompting.
We've been informed that Handerson has been sparring a lot of Muay Thai in the buildup to this fight so let's see if that has an impact on the result.
Handerson cracks Wallace with a right hand to the side of the head.


It looks like Monty Wallace has been cut.
Handerson misses with a straight right.
Handerson misses with a double jab.
Wallace half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range.
Wallace takes a jab on the nose. He smiles like he loves it and keeps coming.

Wallace gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Wallace manages to escape and get back to his feet.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Handerson shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
Wallace wants to get back to his feet.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Handerson is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Handerson prevents Wallace from standing back up.

Handerson seems to be working for a kimura but Wallace defends the submission attempt.
Wallace looks like he's trying to stand up.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Handerson performing his best blanket impression for a moment.
Wallace is looking to improve his position.

Wallace has one foot on Handerson's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet.

Wallace has managed to clinch.
Wallace tries to break the clinch but Handerson is controlling the position.

Wallace doesn't land with the attempted body shot.
Wallace tries to throw a body punch but Handerson avoids it by throwing Wallace back against the cage.

Handerson has moved round to his opponent's back and is looking for a suplex! Oh snap! He's tossed Wallace clear over his head and slammed him to the mat!
Handerson is not going to allow Wallace to sit and survive in this position.

Wallace is trying to get back to his feet. He's worked up on to his knees and now he's on his feet with his head on the canvas, trying to shake Handerson off. It looks like it's working - Handerson slides off, much to his dismay, and we're back to standing! Wallace displaying calm under pressure there.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Wallace misses with a takedown attempt - Handerson sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Handerson has hold of one of Wallace's legs. Wallace is fighting the takedown attempt but Handerson gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Wallace is looking to stand up but Handerson isn't so interested in that idea.

Wallace keeping moving, preventing Handerson from controlling successfully.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Wallace is on top in guard.

Wallace is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Handerson pulls Wallace in close to prevent any damage.
Handerson is continuing to stall.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Wallace decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
Wallace goes for a double leg but Handerson avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Handerson continues to drive forward.

Handerson looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Wallace!

Wallace bucks up and manages to escape back to his feet!

Handerson closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Wallace to the mat! Wallace manages to get full guard.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Wallace has his feet on Handerson's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Nice work.

Handerson drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.

Handerson wants to control from the top but Wallace keeps moving.

Handerson trying to control but Wallace is working from the bottom.

The fighters are working up against the cage. Wallace manages to wriggle his way back to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched against the cage.
Handerson dodges an elbow strike from Wallace.
Wallace tries to circle away but Handerson has him pinned against the cage.
Wallace is looking to break free of the clinch but Handerson has double underhooks.
Wallace throws an elbow but it's blocked.
Handerson blocks a knee to the body. He'll have a nicely bruised forearm in the morning.

Handerson manages to break the clinch.

Handerson has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Wallace off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.

Handerson is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Wallace's half guard.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Wallace is looking for a sweep. Handerson is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Handerson is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

That was a close second round but I would say that Monty Wallace will probably get the nod.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!

Wallace tries to clinch but Handerson is having none of it.

That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Monty Wallace. That's going to take a lot out of him.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Handerson not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

Handerson thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Wallace not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Handerson with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
Handerson working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Wallace's head.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Handerson stands up over Wallace, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
Wallace keeping moving, preventing Handerson from controlling successfully.

Handerson gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
Handerson will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Handerson throws a body kick but he wasn't in range.
Handerson swings away with a leg kick that misses.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Wallace drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.

Handerson looking for a guillotine here but Wallace defends easily.

And that's the end of the fight!
Gil Handerson comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Handerson has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
