PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Cory Maia (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Monty Brewster (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Maia kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Gucci Mane vs. Drake - Runnin' Closer. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Cory Maia!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Monty Brewster!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Brewster works Maia's body with a nice hook.
Maia tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Brewster paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Maia is looking to clinch.
Brewster lands with an overhand left.

Brewster shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Brewster showed some decent athleticism there.
Brewster controlling the pace.
Brewster throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Maia is trying to stand back up but Brewster is controlling him

Maia manages to escape and get back to his feet!
Maia throws a right and a left that Brewster avoids nicely.
Maia throws a sloppy head kick and Brewster moves out of range easily.

Brewster bobs and weaves and unloads with a good uppercut.
No luck for Brewster with that takedown attempt.
A combination from Maia does no damage.
Maia is breathing heavily.

Brewster scores a takedown into full mount!
Brewster controlling from the full mount.
Brewster trying to control but he's not successful this time.
A nice elbow there by Brewster.
Brewster looking to control and managing it successfully.

Brewster lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Maia avoids a series of strikes thrown by Brewster.

Brewster landing punches.
Brewster can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Maia is looking to escape.
Maia takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.

Brewster is working for a guillotine from mount but Maia frees his head quite easily.
Maia is trying to stand up.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Monty Brewster dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Maia fails in his attempt to clinch.
Maia throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Maia tries to clinch but Brewster is having none of it.
Cory Maia is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Brewster has taken the fight to the clinch.
Maia lands a shot to the body.
Maia pushes Brewster back against the cage and lands a hook to the side of the head.
Maia with the Thai clinch. He's looking to land a big knee but he's not managed it this time.
Brewster is looking to break free of the clinch but Maia has double underhooks.
An uppercut on the inside fails to land for Maia.

Maia throws a knee to the head but misses.

Maia throws a nice elbow but it doesn't land.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Maia swings away with an uppercut that misses.

Brewster tries for a takedown but Maia manages to get underhooks.
Brewster blocks a punch to the side of the head.

Maia lands a knee to the head there! That was nasty!
Brewster tries to score a body lock takedown but Maia shows good agility there to stay on his feet.
Cory Maia has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Monty Brewster.

Brewster lands a takedown into guard.
Maia wants to stand but Brewster is controlling the position.
Maia can't keep his opponent in guard - Brewster advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.

Maia kicks off Brewster and gets to his feet.
Brewster works over Maia's head and body with a nice combination.
Maia doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.

Maia throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
and Brewster counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Maia thinking.
Maia walks into a jab.

Brewster decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Brewster stops Maia from getting back to his feet.
Brewster trying to control the pace.
Brewster trying to control from half guard but Maia is working away.
Brewster thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Maia's head.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Maia is looking to get back to is feet but Brewster passes into side control.
Maia managing to avoid any damage from the strikes thrown by Brewster.
Maia is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here.

Brewster is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Maia knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Maia is working to avoid the ground and pound but Brewster connects with a decent elbow.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Brewster remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

Brewster is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Maia is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Brewster has knee on belly and now moves to full mount! Trouble for Maia!
You get the feeling that Maia really doesn't like being in this position too much.
Maia is squirming around, avoiding Brewster's attempts to control the action.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Monty Brewster showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Back to the action! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.


Maia darts in trying to clinch

and Brewster counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Brewster trying to control the position from guard on top but Maia is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Brewster has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Maia wants to get back to his feet but Brewster is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Brewster advances position into side control!
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Brewster prevents Maia from escaping the position.
Brewster tries to score with some ground and pound. Maia controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Brewster lands a knee to the body and follows it up with some ground and pound to the head. That will wear Maia down.
Brewster looks up at the clock and then as Maia takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, Brewster smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!

Brewster tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Brewster passes to full mount! That's big trouble for Maia!
Brewster fails to advance to Maia's back.
Brewster in mount throwing good strikes here, bouncing his opponent's head off the canvas.

Maia is trying to get to the cage to help him get back to his feet.
Brewster fakes a shot to the body and cracks his opponent in the head. Nice ground and pound there!

Brewster is going olschool here, as he tries to force Maia to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Maia shrugs it off.
Brewster tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Brewster is landing with some decent strikes but Maia is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.

Brewster looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead.
Maia is trying to get to the cage to help him get back to his feet.
Brewster scores with a couple of good head shots there.
Brewster trying to control but he's not successful this time.

Brewster working to secure an arm triangle but it's not happening for him just yet.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Brewster controlling his opponent.
Brewster punching from mount but Maia doing a good job of avoiding damage.
Monty Brewster is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Brewster unloads with some shots from mount but Maia bucks and avoids them well.
Cory Maia has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Maia has worked his way to half guard, taking advantage of Brewster's lack of action.

Monty Brewster comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Brewster winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
