The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Alvarez instigates a clinch.

Van Barneveld turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Van Barneveld manages to end up in side control.

Alvarez sneaks out the side door and pushes Van Barneveld away - he's back to his feet. The crowd show their appreciation for the escape.
Alvarez really is a fat lump.

Van Barneveld looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.

Alvarez manages to create a bit of space in order to work his way back to his feet. Van Barneveld keeps hold of his opponent and drives him back against the cage.

Van Barneveld has momentary wrist control but Alvarez slips an elbow through the middle.
Alvarez lands a couple of elbows.
Van Barneveld wants to control the position but Alvarez says "no thanks buddy" and passes to half guard.

Alvarez has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Alvarez scores with a couple of nice shots to the head there. The referee takes a look at Van Barneveld to see if he's OK.

Alvarez decides to stand back up. Alvarez steps back and let's Van Barneveld get back to his feet.
Van Barneveld motions for Alvarez to come forward. Van Barneveld throws a leg kick but it misses it's target.

Alvarez instigates a clinch.
Van Barneveld is trying to slow down the pace of the fight but Alvarez is keeping busy.

Van Barneveld has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Alvarez is trying to keep an underhook but Van Barneveld manages to get the takedown into half guard.

Alvarez has one foot on Van Barneveld's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet.

Van Barneveld tries to keep at a distance but Alvarez has taken the fight into the clinch.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Alvarez decides to pull guard.

Van Barneveld wants to stand up, so he's looking to wriggle free of Alvarez's closed guard. He's half up but Alvarez has locked on to an arm! Uh oh! Alvarez pivots and extends the arm, Van Barneveld falls face first to the mat and taps??... does he?? YES! He's tapping! Excellent counter grappling there by Alvarez! Well done that man!
