PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Danial Cunningham (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jacek Placek (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Placek is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Jestem Szalencem. Danial Cunningham has a significant reach advantage - let's see if he can make it count.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Danial Cunningham!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Jacek Placek!
The judges for this bout are Konstantin Menshow, Aleksandr Martynov and Igor Prikhodko.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Placek fakes a jab and then connects with a hook.
Placek misses with a series of wild punches.
No joy there for Placek, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
A little feinted left hand from Cunningham on the counter but he doesn't commit to it.
Placek tries to score a power double leg takedown but Cunningham sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Placek somewhat.
Cunningham really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Cunningham shoots in and drives through. Placek sprawls well.
Cunningham fails with a takedown attempt.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Cunningham avoids a kick to the body.

Cunningham gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.
Placek tries to break the clinch but Cunningham is controlling the position.

Cunningham ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Cunningham no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

Placek wants to pass the guard but Cunningham is keeping the position.
Placek wants to control from the top but Cunningham keeps moving.

Cunningham looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Cunningham tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Placek stops Cunningham from standing up.
Cunningham keeping full guard, as Placek tries to pass.
Cunningham wants to stand and escape but Placek is having none of it.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

Cunningham shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Cunningham was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

Cunningham decides to stand back up.
Placek shoots and misses
and Cunningham counters with a two punch combo.
Cunningham displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Placek.
Danial Cunningham has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jacek Placek.
Placek looks to throw the jab but Cunningham is out of range.
Cunningham went nuts there looking for a big combo counter but none of the flurry connected.

Placek gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Cunningham has Placek pressed against the cage, preventing Placek from circling away and getting back to striking at range.

Cunningham has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Placek uses from the top position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Placek wants to pass the guard but Cunningham is keeping the position.

Cunningham is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Placek defends well.

Cunningham pushes Placek off and scrambles back to his feet.
Placek clobbers Cunningham with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.
Cunningham moves out of range of the leg kick from Placek.
Placek feints and then cracks Cunningham's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Cunningham down.
Cunningham closes the distance and clinches up with Placek, looking for a takedown. Cunningham pushes Placek against the cage but Placek circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Placek swings away with a leg kick that misses.
Cunningham gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Placek cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
Cunningham is breathing heavily.
Placek fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Placek darts in and out, connecting with a jab.

Cunningham throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Placek was covering up waiting for the punch and Cunningham finishes the takedown easily into guard.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Placek working for submissions but it's allowed Cunningham to get to half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Danial Cunningham will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Placek tries a head kick but it misses.

Cunningham closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Placek is looking to reverse the position.

Cunningham decides to take the fight back to the feet.
Cunningham takes a shot to the nose. Hopefully that hasn't broken it.
Placek stooping low to avoid any incoming strikes and then lunges in with an uppercut come cross that lands flush.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Placek swinging wildly here.
Placek buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.

Cunningham closes this distance looking for a takedown but Placek circles away.
It seemed like Placek was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it.
Cunningham looks for a takedown but Placek sprawls well.

Cunningham fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Placek sprawls well initially but Cunningham persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Placek preventing any damage for now, controlling his opponent's head.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Cunningham wants to stand but Placek has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.
Placek trying to control here but he's found himself mounted! Oh no!
Danial Cunningham overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Cunningham prevents Placek from getting the reversal.

Placek tries to hold on but Cunningham pushes him away.
Cunningham fakes a shot to the body and cracks his opponent in the head. Nice ground and pound there!
Cunningham controlling the position easily from mount.
Placek is desperately trying to improve his position but Cunningham has a good base and remains in mount.
Cunningham takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Placek in a bad spot here, taking shots to the head.
Placek sneaks a leg under to get to half guard.
Cunningham throwing shots but Placek is blocking nicely.
Cunningham with the ground and pound but Placek uses the opportunity to regain guard.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Cunningham slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Cunningham postures up.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Danial Cunningham will probably get the nod.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!


Cunningham tries for a takedown but Placek sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

A head punch blocked on the inside by Placek.
Cunningham fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Placek changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Cunningham fights it off and pushes away nicely.
Danga de danga de dang - Placek scores with a four punch combination!

and Placek counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Danial Cunningham. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Placek has one foot on Cunningham's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet.
Jacek Placek seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Placek throws a leg kick but Cunningham sees it coming and checks it nicely.

The fight moves into the clinch position.

Cunningham is trying to trip Placek. He has hold of a leg but Placek is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Cunningham persists though and gets the takedown into guard.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Placek throwing some rather feeble looking strikes off his back.

Cunningham cracks Placek with a solid left hand.
Cunningham wants to stand but Placek is controlling his posture from full guard.
Placek looking for a sweep. Not yet Placek, not yet.

Placek wants to improve his position but instead Cunningham has moved into half guard.
Placek trying to hold on to Cunningham's head to control him but Cunningham postures up.
Cunningham takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Cunningham fails with the takedown.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Placek throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Cunningham ducks under a wild hook from Placek.
Cunningham slips a jab from Placek.
Placek changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Cunningham tries to avoid it but Placek manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Cunningham to the ground. Cunningham escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Cunningham is looking for a counter combo.
A jab from Placek misses.
Cunningham appears to be looking for a big counter.
Placek with a poor takedown
and Cunningham makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.
Placek throws a lazy head kick

and Cunningham counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Placek!

Cunningham wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Placek, who protects the arm well.

Cunningham has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Jacek Placek.
I think Cunningham has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
