PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between James Scott (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ryan McCarthy (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Scott comes into the arena with Massive Attack - One thought at a time blaring out of the sound system. Both fighters look pumped up here. Let's hope this is a good fight!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, James Scott!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 1, fighting out of New York, Ryan McCarthy!
The judges for this bout are Lou da Vinci, Alyssa Summers and Reed Andrews.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Horrible takedown by Scott or perhaps it was just good defense by McCarthy which made him look bad.

McCarthy gets a takedown into half guard.
Scott keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
McCarthy missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.
Scott is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of McCarthy's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take McCarthy's back!
Scott lands with a couple of good shots - one to the side of the head and one questionable shot that could be viewed as to the back of the head but the referee lets it go.
Scott trying to secure his dominant position for a moment - making sure McCarthy doesn't escape.

Scott is looking for the choke from the back position but McCarthy is controlling his hands well.
McCarthy trying to control the action but Scott just sinks the hooks in.
McCarthy avoids the strikes from Scott.

Scott is remaining active here, looking for the choke. The more discerning members of the crowd will appreciate his efforts.

McCarthy is displaying good submission defense - not really looking in danger of submitting to the rear naked choke at the moment. That could change in an instant of course if Scott gets his way!

Scott scores with punches to the body.
McCarthy manages to reverse the position and now he's in Scott's guard. Nice work there by McCarthy.
McCarthy wanted to stand there but Scott had control of the position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
McCarthy loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
McCarthy is looking to work some ground and pound but Scott has wrist control.
McCarthy stopping the sweep attempt from Scott.
Scott has momentary wrist control but McCarthy slips an elbow through the middle.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
McCarthy loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

McCarthy clinches.
Scott scores with a hook to the body.
McCarthy tries to score a body lock takedown but Scott shows good agility there to stay on his feet.
McCarthy blocks a knee to the body. He'll have a nicely bruised forearm in the morning.
McCarthy gets underhooks to prevent Scott's takedown attempt.
McCarthy dictating the pace here, as the fighters clinch against the cage.
McCarthy tries to land knees in the clinch but Scott avoids the damage to the body.
McCarthy looks gassed!

McCarthy pulls Scott into guard.

Scott is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! McCarthy is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! McCarthy has escaped and now he's on top!
Scott has a closed guard, preventing McCarthy from standing up.

Scott is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Scott striking off his back but it's not causing McCarthy any problems.

McCarthy throws a series of punches but Scott avoids them all with ease.
McCarthy misses with a wild combination.
Scott keeps the fight on the outside.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
McCarthy throws a head kick that Scott semi-blocks.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Scott.
Scott misses with an attempted head punch from side control.
McCarthy wants to control but Scott postures up.
Scott working the strikes but McCarthy uses the opportunity to regain half guard.

McCarthy looking for submissions off his back.
McCarthy is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Scott missing with the ground and pound from half guard.
Scott seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Scott is tying to control. McCarthy wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that James Scott will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.



McCarthy closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Scott to the mat! Scott manages to get full guard.
Scott not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
McCarthy wants to stand but Scott has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Scott has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
Scott tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Scott is actively looking for submissions from his back. He's worked himself a little space on the bottom and seems to be going for a triangle. No, he's switched into an armbar! That was slick! McCarthy rolls with it to try and escape but Scott cranks on the arm and McCarthy is forced to tap out! This one is aaaaaaaaall over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:53 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). James Scott!
